Niance (barrier 12) brings both untapped potential and winning momentum into the race.

Lightly raced but supremely talented, she pieced together a hat-trick of victories across 2024, highlighted by a stakes double during her brief spring campaign.

Her Group 3 triumph on November 16 came under circumstances that did not favour her on-pace style, with swoopers dominating the program at Caulfield that afternoon.

Injury prevented her from contesting the major autumn features, yet she returned in style on May 31 and she won her last jump-out on August 25.

Baraqiel (barrier 10) is another galloper who has quickly established himself as a track specialist at Moonee Valley.

Since making his delayed debut, the son of Snitzel has compiled a record of seven wins and three placings from just 11 starts.

Importantly, he is unbeaten in three attempts at Moonee Valley, and he ticked the 1000m box via his recent success in the Carlyon Stakes.

Skybird (barrier 5), already a Group 1 winner, adds star power to the field, having produced a dazzling victory in the Black Caviar Lightning.

Injury ruled out an autumn campaign following her Flemington victory, but she has since sharpened up with two August trials ahead of her spring return.

Alabama Lass (barrier 3) represents consistency personified. The New Zealand-bred mare won six of her nine career starts, headlined by the Group 2 Soliloquy Stakes and a Listed success at Flemington.

On each of the three occasions she hasn’t saluted, she has finished runner-up.

Esha (barrier 4) is the x-factor in the Moir field. Unbeaten from two starts, she has created a significant impression with dominant victories at Morphettville and Moonee Valley.

Still on the rise, the progressive filly brings raw talent and untapped upside into her first major test under lights at The Valley. However, as the first and only emergency, she still needs a scratching to make the final field.

Golden Boom (barrier 15) brings proven short-course form and raw speed to the contest.

The Queensland visitor has displayed blistering early pace and the ability to sustain pressure, making him a dangerous on-pace runner if conditions suit.

Arabian Summer (barrier 1) is another emerging name, having made her mark in age-restricted features as a two and three-year-old.

She faces her toughest test to date, but profiles as the type who could take the leap against seasoned sprinters.

Moir Stakes Winners

The Moir Stakes might not be the oldest race on the Melbourne calendar, but it is without question one of the more beloved sprinting events.

The inimitable Black Caviar, Queensland juggernaut Buffering and hall of famer Apache Cat launched big campaigns on the back of AJ Moir Stakes success, with Manikato, Placid Ark, Schillaci, Miss Andretti, Nature Strip and Imperatriz also among the champions to have won this race.

This 1000m dash was traditionally run the night before the AFL Grand Final, however, it's now been contested early in September as a main lead-up for the Mankiato Stakes, which is now run on AFL Grand Final eve.

Coolangatta (2022), Imperatriz (2023) and Mornington Glory (2024) have won the last three editions of the Moir Stakes.
