The Moir Stakes was previously run the night before the AFL Grand Final, however, it's now been contested early in September as a main lead-up for the Manikato Stakes, which is now run on AFL Grand Final eve.

Early favourite Estriella (barrier 8) was brilliant at the start of her last campaign, with a winning hat-trick recorded before an end of prep effort when finishing fifth-of-fourteen via the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes.

The four-year-old still has upside, with only eight starts from two campaigns to date and with further progression, she could be among Australia's leading sprinters this season.

I Wish I Win (barrier 5) broke a 14 month winning drought in his last winter appearance and he defeated an in-form Bella Nipotina in the process.

Blinkers were reapplied ahead of that Kingsford-Smith Cup victory and while his main spring aim will The Everest, the Moir Stakes is a logical starting point early in the campaign.

Lady Of Camelot (barrier 2), Coleman (barrier 6) and Hayasugi (barrier 7) have accepted for this 1000m feature and it's worth noting that three-year-old's have accounted for three of the last eight Moir Stakes winners.

That trio were among the best two-year-old's in Australia last season, with Lady Of Camelot and Coleman finishing one-two in the Golden Slipper, while Hayasugi narrowly defeated Lady Of Camelot when taking out the Blue Diamond Stakes.

Nine runners have accepted for the 2024 moir Stakes, which will be contested at Moonee Valley on Saturday, September 7.

Moir Stakes Winners

The Moir Stakes might not be the oldest race on the Melbourne calendar, but it is without question one of the more beloved sprinting events.

The inimitable Black Caviar, Queensland juggernaut Buffering and hall of famer Apache Cat launched big campaigns on the back of AJ Moir Stakes success, while Viddora claimed the prize in 2018 before heading to Hong Kong.

This 1000m race was traditionally run the night before the AFL Grand Final, however, it's now been contested early in September as a main lead-up for the Mankiato Stakes, which is now run on AFL Grand Final eve.

Wild Ruler (2021), Coolangatta (2022) and Imperatriz (2023) have won the last three editions of the Moir Stakes.
