It's amazing there was a time not long ago where grass was considered Alcaraz's least-preferred surface. The Spaniard, still just 22 years of age, is now within striking distance of a third consecutive Wimbledon crown and comes into this clash having won 30 of his last 31 matches on grass - along with an overall 23-match winning streak. For context, this is only the fifth time Alcaraz has played Wimbledon and he's on the cusp of a third title - Roger Federer meanwhile only won his first trophy at SW19 on his fifth attempt.

I believe this match will go four or five sets, but Alcaraz is just on another level and even if he does have one of those trademark concentration lapses, he's proven enough times he has the ability to recover and knuckle down when it matters most. Fritz certainly can't be underestimated and I think he can win a set - the American has a tour-leading 13 wins on grass so far this season after securing titles in Stuttgart and Eastbourne. However, Fritz has a 1-16 record against the elite trio of Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic, illustrating just how far behind he is when compared to the very best. Alcaraz winning in four or five is the most likely outcome for this semi-final.

Head To Head

Alcaraz leads 2-0, winning their first meeting 6-4 6-2 in the 2023 Miami quarter-finals before a 6-2 7-5 triumph at the Laver Cup last year.

Carlos Alcaraz Form

Alcaraz comes into this showdown with a tour-leading 47-5 record on the season, collecting five titles and reclaiming his World No. 2 ranking.

However, it's certainly safe to say Alcaraz is the undisputed World No. 1 when it comes to clay and grass - he's won his last five meetings with No. 1 Sinner, including toppling the Italian in the Rome and Roland Garros finals.

The Spaniard also picked up the Monte Carlo title and launched his short grass swing by lifting the Queen's Club silverware.

Although Alcaraz has dropped at least one set in three of his five Wimbledon matches, he's never once looked in any real danger. After a five-set triumph over the retiring Fabio Fognini in the opening round, Alcaraz moved past qualifier Oliver Tarvet in straight sets and Jan-Lennard Struff in four sets.

Alcaraz proceeded to dispatch Andrey Rublev in four sets to reach the quarter-finals, where he produced his most ruthless performance of the tournament, crushing Cameron Norrie 6-2, 6-3, 6-3, saving all five break points he faced.

Taylor Fritz Form

Fritz heads into this encounter with a 30-11 record on the season, with almost half of those victories coming over the last month on grass.

The American struggled at the start of the season with niggling injuries and the increased expectation/pressure that came with reaching the US Open final last year.

However, Fritz has returned to his best form on grass, winning titles in Stuttgart and Eastbourne in the lead-up to Wimbledon, where he has now advanced into his second Grand Slam semi-final.

Fritz was dealt arguably the toughest early draw of any top player as he overcome the big-serving Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and Gabriel Diallo in five sets before navigating past the dangerous Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in four.

The 27-year-old then benefitted from Jordan Thompson retiring injured in the R16 before toughing out a four-set victory over Karen Khachanov in the quarter-finals, prevailing 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(4) to win his first Wimbledon quarter-final on his third attempt.

Verdict

Alcaraz is on a 23-match winning streak and Fritz has more grass wins (13) than anyone this season. Should be a fun match.

I have to back Alcaraz - he's a proven force in these situations and has won both previous meetings, while Fritz is 1-16 vs the elite trio of Alcaraz, Sinner and Djokovic, highlighting his inability to break through at this level. Alcaraz to win and Fritz to take a set is the play here.
