In an exciting US Open second-round showdown, seasoned player Tomas Machac faces rising talent Joao Fonseca. Despite Machac's inconsistency, his dominant first-round victory suggests potential momentum. Fonseca, on the other hand, has displayed remarkable resilience in Grand Slams, aiming for his third consecutive third-round appearance. Although Machac has struggled lately with only five wins post-March, his game against Luca Nardi was decisive. Meanwhile, Fonseca's breakthrough season continues, evidenced by a hard-fought victory over Miomir Kecmanovic. This match marks their first encounter, but Fonseca's underdog potential and five-set prediction warrant attention.

Tomas Machac vs Joao Fonseca Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

One of the standout matches of the US Open second round sees rising star Joao Fonseca come up against 21st seed Tomas Machac on Grandstand on Wednesday.

It's one of the sport's most mercurial players up against arguably its brightest young talent as Machac and Fonseca collide for a place in the US Open third round. Machac is capable of beating almost anybody on his day, the problem is you simply never know when his 'day' will be. The Czech has only won five matches since March, but he was a dominant winner over Luca Nardi in his opening round and perhaps could be building to something in New York. Fonseca meanwhile is a future Grand Slam champion and is aiming to reach the third round of a major for the third consecutive tournament after doing so at Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

I'm liking Fonseca as the slight underdog here. The 18-year-old has already proven he has the ability to raise his level at the slams, while Machac simply can't be trusted with his form, fitness and motivation. The Czech has gone five sets in his previous two Grand Slam second round appearances, so Fonseca prevailing in five is the value bet.

Head To Head

This will be the first career meeting between the pair.

Tomas Machac Form

It's been a wildly inconsistent season for Machac, who comes into this clash with a 20-14 record, but with just five victories since the Miami Masters in March.

Machac put together a solid star to the year, winning the ATP 500 title in Acapulco, along with making the third round of the Australian Open and. R16 in Miami.

However, the Czech has only won five matches since, crashing out in the opening round of Wimbledon to qualifier August Holmgren, while he also suffered opening round eliminations in Toronto (vs Opelka) and Cincinnati (vs Mannarino).

Seemingly always dealing with some sort of injury, Machac looked set for another early exit in New York - however, the mercurial 24-year-old dropped just five games in a blistering 6-3 6-1 6-1 crushing of Luca Nardi in the first round.

Machac made the fourth round of the US Open in 2024, beating Seb Korda before going down to Jack Draper.

Joao Fonseca Form

Despite his form tailing off lately, it's been a brilliant breakout season on the main tour for Fonseca, who comes into this contest with a 18-13 record at tour-level and operating at No. 45 in the world.

In good news for his US Open campaign, Fonseca has performed superbly on hardcourt in 2025 - he's won 20 of his 25 matches on the surface at all levels, with 11 of those coming in North America.

The 18-year-old is now a perfect 4-0 in Grand Slam first round matches - he famously stunned top 10 player Andrey Rublev at the Australian Open and after reaching the third round at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon, the Brazilian has got off the mark at the US Open this week.

Fonseca had a tough opening opponent, but managed to subdue Miomir Kecmanovic 7-6 7-6 6-3 in his US Open main draw debut.

Verdict

You just never know what you're going to get from Machac, but Fonseca has proven his mettle when it comes to Grand Slam tennis in the early rounds.

Backing Fonseca to make the third round of a major for the third straight tournament, with value in a five-set win when you consider Machac has gone the distance twice already in 2025 in R2 slam matches.
