Beau Mertens has been a profitable rider to follow at Geelong over the past 12 months, striking at 19.5% with an ROI of nearly 29%, and he takes back the reins on Trentino after partnering the galloper in his first two career starts.
There was more merit in those efforts than the bare results suggest, particularly his debut behind the smart Lady Verity, while he then improved over 1300m at Cranbourne when finishing fifth-of-11 after striking trouble and making ground from the rear.
That first campaign ended after he was freshened into a heat of the Future Stars series, where he was well supported in a race that produced four subsequent winners.
Returning from just one jump-out, Trentino was a notable drifter before his September 13 resumption at Sale, but there was still plenty to like about the run after he knuckled at the start and made inroads while recording the fastest final 800m, 600m and 400m of the maiden.
He should strip fitter second-up, gets the chance to settle closer from a kinder barrier and looks suited by the slight rise in distance, making the big each-way quote appealing.

Geelong Best Bet - Race 3 No. 12 Stipulation
This looks a good opportunity for the Ciaron Maher-trained Stipulation to breakthrough, with the daughter of Frankel stepping to 1425m after opening her career with two competitive metropolitan performances over 1200m.
The first came on the Sandown Lakeside circuit on August 19, where she finished an eye-catching fourth of 10 after making ground in restricted room and recording the fastest final 400m of the race.
Stipulation was able to settle closer to the speed at Sandown Hillside last time and may simply have run into a smart one in Regal Ambition, who had finished second to a talented Tolaga Bay on debut before a break.
While Stipulation lacked the turn-of-foot of the winner over 1200m, she stuck to the task strongly and put a 2.75-length margin on third, while the tactical speed she showed was another positive.
John Allen retains the ride after partnering her in both race starts and her August 10 jump-out win over handy stablemate Unit Five, and with the rise in trip and potentially firmer ground both suiting, Stipulation looks well placed to open her account.
The National Hotel 0-62 Handicap Tips (Race 5)
Geelong Value Bet - Race 5 No. 13 Naughty Sort
While her form reads a little mixed on paper, Naughty Sort remains lightly raced and there have been genuine excuses for two of her major disappointments.
Her final New South Wales appearance resulted in a last-of-five finish when she was slow to recover, while her third run for the Glen Thompson stable in May ended with an eighth of eight at Pakenham after she was found to be lame post-race.
She was then spelled and completed a decent Flemington jump-out before resuming at Bendigo on August 26, where she was back in the market and produced an even fifth-of-nine in a Class 1 won by the progressive Col Klink.
That form has worked out nicely, with runner-up Gina's A Star winning a metropolitan Benchmark 70 at her next appearance, while Naughty Sort had already shown promise earlier for the stable when finishing third at Cranbourne before running second at Pakenham on May 8.
She recorded the fastest final 400m and 200m in that Pakenham race won by Barari, who then won her next two starts, including a Saturday affair at Flemington, while a return to firmer ground looks another positive for Naughty Sort on Wednesday.
Honky Cat Saloon BM78 Handicap Tips (Race 6)
Geelong Next Best Bet - Race 6 No. 4 Black Peppermint
The last time Black Peppermint raced beyond 2400m on firm ground resulted in a Benchmark 70 victory on Cranbourne Cup Day, before he stepped up in grade on a softer surface in a Benchmark 78 won by the smart Shockletz.
He had one more run in January before a break, and while he has not threatened to win in four starts this preparation, each performance suggests he has been building towards a peak effort.
The Patrick Payne-trained gelding finished fifth-of-nine over 2400m at Sandown Hillside on September 9, importantly getting another staying run under his belt despite appearing not to handle the Soft 7 conditions.
That followed a solid chasing effort in the Sheep Hills Cup at Warracknabeal, where he sustained a wide run, while his second-up performance at Caulfield Heath also had merit as runner-up when outperforming a 30/1 starting quote.
Back on firmer ground, carrying 5kg less than last start and now finding the right setup, Black Peppermint looks capable of giving a strong account at an each-way price.
