After finishing runner-up at last year's US Open, Fritz is determined to go one step further in this year's edition. However, to do so, he must run a likely gauntlet of Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. It's an almost-impossible task for Fritz and he will do well to simply make it past this quarter-final matchup when you take his head-to-head with Djokovic into consideration.
Indeed, Djokovic is a perfect 10-0 against Fritz over the course of their careers, winning 23 of the 26 sets they've contested. It doesn't get much more dominant than that. Of course, Fritz is at the peak of his career right now and Djokovic has entered the twilight of his, but the Serbian remains arguably the third-best player in the world behind Sinner and Alcaraz. The 38-year-old has become the oldest US Open quarter-finalist since Jimmy Connors in 1991 this tournament and although he's been receiving medical treatment in all of his matches, he looks fit and fresh. Fritz is playing well, but I don't think he's been at his best this summer, so he'll need to raise his level considerably here. I can't ignore a H2H that one-sided, so Djokovic has the slight edge in my eyes.
Head To Head
As mentioned, Djokovic has won all 10 previous meetings, including Grand Slam encounters and 23 of the 26 total sets.
Taylor Fritz Form
Fritz comes into this contest with a 42-15 record on the season, overcoming a difficult start to the year to go 25-5 in his last 30 matches since the grass swing.
The American picked up two ATP titles in Stuttgart and Eastbourne before reaching the semi-finals of Wimbledon, where he went down to Carlos Alcaraz in a close four-setter.
It wasn't the best summer for Fritz leading into the US Open - he went down to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in Washington, fell to countryman Ben Shelton in Toronto and lost to qualifier Terence Atmane in Cincinnati.
Defending runner-up points from last year, Fritz has got the job done so far at the US Open, but it hasn't been entirely straightforward, dropping sets to Lloyd Harris and Jerome Kym before a good straight sets victory over Tomas Machac in the R16.
Novak Djokovic Form
Djokovic heads into this encounter with a 30-9 record on the season, playing a limited schedule as he continues his search for a 25th major title.
Indeed, Djokovic hasn't played a regular ATP event since capturing his 100th career title in Geneva just before the French Open.
The Serbian has made the semi-finals of the Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon, but has run into a red-hot Jannik Sinner in the latter two, along with being forced to retire injured agains Alexander Zverev in Melbourne after beating Carlos Alcaraz.
Djokovic is in Alcaraz's side of the draw at this US Open, so it would be interesting to see how he would perform in that matchup right now.
The 38-year-old has also been shaky at stages this tournament, dropping sets to Zachary Svajda and Cameron Norrie, but his dominant 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Jan-Lennard Struff in the R16. was undoubtedly his best performance of the tournament.

Verdict
Fritz should have a better chance than his 10 previous defeats to Djokovic, but this is obviously a tough matchup for the American.
Djokovic is looking strong (despite the medical timeouts) and is a ridiculous 50-10 in Grand Slam quarter-finals - including a perfect 13-0 in New York. Have to side with the Serbian again here.
