After surviving Ajla Tomljanovic in three sets in her first round, Gauff now must take on former top 20 players Donna Vekic, who has previously reached the US Open quarter-finals. Gauff has come under heavy scrutiny for her shaky serve, which prompted an urgent coaching change pre-tournament. The American served 10 double faults in her opening round and still appeared vulnerable behind her own delivery. Vekic has one of the best serves in women's tennis when she's on, so the pressure could be on again here.
Vekic has a very solid 5-8 record against top three players in her career and she's beaten Gauff before. Under the lights and in primetime, there's no reason why Vekic can't push Gauff to her limits once again. However, the Croatian hasn't bene in great form lately, so when push comes to shove, I'm not sure she's ready to pull off the upset. Going to back Gauff in a tight one, much like her opening round.

Currently level at 1-1. Vekic was a 7-6 6-2 winner at the 2024 Paris Olympics before Gauff returned serve with a 6-4 6-2 victory at the United Cup to start this season.

Gauff has recorded a 36-12 record on the season and came into the US Open ranked No. 3 in the world.
The American added a second Grand Slam title to her collection by beating Aryna Sabalenka for the Roland Garros silverware. However, it hasn't been a great season overall for Gauff - 17 of her 36 wins came at three tournaments during the clay swing and she's yet to make a final on hardcourt.
Gauff has struggled since leaving Paris and was knocked out of Wimbledon in the opening round, while she was below her best in losses to Victoria Mboko and Jasmine Paolini in Montreal and Cincinnati respectively.
Leading the tour for double faults, Gauff hired a biomechanics specialist to help with her troublesome serve ahead of the US Open. The 2023 champion still served 10 double faults, but managed to steady when it mattered most against Tomljanovic in the opening round, surviving the Aussie by a 6-4, 6-7 (2), 7-5 score in almost three hours.
Donna Vekic Form
It's been a tough season for Vekic, who comes into this clash with a 12-19 record and down at No. 49 in the world.
A former Wimbledon semi-finalist and with a peak ranking of No. 17 in the world, Vekic hasn't won back-to-back matches since Madrid, highlighting her challenges in 2025.
However, on her day, Vekic remains one of the most dangerous unseeded players at the slams and she registered an impressive win in her opening round.
Taking on the in-form Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, Vekic recovered from a set down to prevail 3-6 7-5 6-3. The 29-year-old was a US Open quarter-finalist in 2019 and made the fourth round last year.

Verdict
Gauff is still far from her best and appears there for the taking in these early rounds. Vekic has the ability to cause the upset, but she also hasn't won back-to-back matches since April.
I'll back Gauff to grind out a tough win here.
