The pressure is on for Gauff as she enters her home slam with lots of expectation. The American hasn't played well since winning her second Grand Slam title at Roland Garros in June, winning just four matches. Gauff went all the way in New York, winning her maiden major crown in 2023, but she was stopped in the fourth round by countrywoman Emma Navarro in the R16 last year.
Meanwhile, Tomljanovic has also enjoyed some career highlights at the US Open, making the quarter-finals in 2022 - the same year she ended the career of Serena Williams. However, Tomljanovic has been struck down by injuries since that career-best year and she's struggled to get back to that sort of tennis. But in this match, the Aussie has nothing to lose. The American hasn't made a hardcourt final in 2025 and has only won four matches since conquering Aryna Sabalenka in the French Open title match, losing in the opening round of Wimbledon.
Gauff was bundled out of Montreal by eventual champion Victoria Mboko in the R16 before going down to Jasmine Paolini in the Cincinnati quarter-finals. Still just 21 years of age, Gauff will be featuring in her seventh US Open main draw this tournament.

Tomljanovic has registered a 20-19 record at all levels this season, arriving at the US Open at No. 79 in the world, which is a far way off her career-best ranking of No. 31, which was achieved in 2022.
The Aussie's best results on the main tour have been semi-final showings in Austin and Rabat, along with a third round in Charleston.
It hasn't been a great summer - Tomljanovic lost in the opening round of Toronto to Anastasija Sevastova before second round displays at both Cincinnati and Monterrey, losing to Clara Tauson and Ekaterina Alexandrova respectively.
