Aryna Sabalenka, the world No.1, is set to face Polina Kudermetova in the US Open third round. Sabalenka has been consistent at the US Open, reaching at least the semi-finals in her last four appearances, including a victory in 2024. She enters the game with a strong start following her win over Rebeka Masarova. Kudermetova, however, has faced a decline in performance since January and hasn't defeated a top 500 player since April. Given the circumstances, Sabalenka is favored to cover a -6.5 games line in victory.

Sabalenka has been incredibly consistent at the US Open throughout her career - it's the Grand Slam where she's won the most matches and she's made at least the semi-finals in her last four appearances, highlighted by taking the title in 2024. Sabalenka got her title defence off to the perfect start in her opening round, completing a straight sets victory over Rebeka Masarova, and she'll be confident of another routine match here.

Kudermetova, the younger sister of Veronika, enjoyed a whirlwind start to the season, but it's all gone downhill since a runner-up finish in Brisbane in January. Kudermetova hasn't beaten a top 500 player since April 1 in a completed match, advancing through to this clash after her opponent retired with an ankle injury. Can't see Sabalenka having any troubles in this matchup whatsoever.

Head To Head

Sabalenka leads 1-0, overcoming Kudermetova 4-6 6-3 6-2 in the final of Brisbane to start the season. However, when you look at the rest of Kudermetova's season, that result was an extreme outlier.

Aryna Sabalenka Form

Sabalenka has put together a 51-10 record for the season coming into this clash, remaining at World No.1 despite failing to add another Grand Slam to her trophy cabinet.

It's been a brutal year for Sabalenka at the slams - she lost finals at the Australian Open and Roland Garros to Madison Keys and Coco Gauff respectively, while Amanda Anisimova got the better of her in the Wimbledon semis. That's three straight defeats in the business stages of slams to American opponents - can she turn things around in New York?

After opting to bypass Montreal, Sabalenka returned to action in Cincinnati, where she got three wins under her belt over Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, Emma Raducanu and Marketa Vondrousova before going down to Elena Rybakina in the quarter-finals.

Sabalenka got her US Open title defence up and running with a routine 7-5 6-1 win over Rebeka Masarova, maintaining her unbeaten streak in opening round matches at Flushing Meadows.

Polina Kudermetova Form

Kudermetova has gone 16-19 at all levels so far in 2025, but she hasn't been able to build on her stellar start to the year, which saw her win 10 of her opening 11 matches.

Indeed, Kudermetova came from qualifying to make it all the way to the WTA 500 Brisbane final, where it took none other than Sabalenka to stop her in three sets.

The 22-year-old backed it up by qualifying for the Australian Open main draw, but it's been slim pickings ever since.

Kudermetova went on a 10-match losing streak from Charleston to Cincinnati and hasn't beaten a player ranked inside the top 500 since April 1. The Russian advanced into the US Open second round after her opponent Nuria Parrizas Diaz retired with an ankle injury. Kudermetova still doesn't have a completed main draw win at a slam in her career.

Verdict

Kudermetova has been struggling significantly over the last few months and just isn't anywhere close to the level required to do damage here.

Back Sabalenka to cover a -6.5 games line in victory.
