The upcoming US Open match features the eighth seed, Amanda Anisimova, competing against Australian teenager Maya Joint. Despite Anisimova's mixed past performances at the US Open, her impressive season, which includes a Wimbledon final and a WTA title in Doha, boosts her chances. Joint, having a breakout year, has climbed significantly in world rankings, though she struggles against top-tier players. Given Anisimova's current form, she is favored to win in straight sets. Somewhat surprisingly, the US Open is the only Grand Slam where Anisimova has a losing record. Indeed, before this tournament, Anisimova's record in New York stood at just 38 per cent, compared to 63+ at the other three majors. However, Anisimova is a different player these days, putting together a career-best season that has included a Wimbledon final and WTA 1000 title in Doha. After coming through her opening round in straight sets over Kim Birrell, Anisimova faces another Aussie in the second round.

Joint is also having a career-best season, breaking through on the main tour to crack the top 50 after being ranked outside the top 500 at the start of 2024. The 19-year-old has won two WTA titles this year and remains one of the highest-ranked teenagers in the world. However, Joint has been outclassed when coming up against the best players, losing all four matches she's played against opponents ranked No. 19 or higher in straight sets. With this in mind, backing Anisimova in for a straight sets victory in New York.

Head To Head

This will be the first career meeting between the pair.

Amanda Anisimova Form

It's been a stellar season for Anisimova, who comes into this showdown with a 34-15 record and at No. 9 in the world.

Anisimova has broken into the world's top 10 for the first time after a number of brilliant results, highlighted by winning the WTA 100 title in Doha in February and reaching her maiden Grand Slam final at Wimbledon, where she took out Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-finals.

There was a bit of a letdown this summer, with Anisimova failing to make a quarter-final at both Montreal and Cincinnati, going down to Elina Svitolina and Anna Kalinskaya respectively.

However, the 23-year-old returned to the winners circle in New York, easing past Kim Birrell 6-3 6-2 in her opening round, winning the last five games of the match.

Maya Joint Form

It's been a huge year for Joint - she's put together a 42-21 record at all levels to rise into the world's top 50 and cement herself on the main tour.

Joint has won two WTA titles in Rabat and Eastbourne - however, both of those tournaments came in the week before a slam at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, with the Aussie subsequently losing in the opening round of both.

The 19-year-old lost in the first round of Cleveland last week to Eva Lys, but it might have been a blessing in disguise, because she was able to win her first Grand Slam match of 2025 in her opening round in New York.

Joint recovered from 1-5 down in the second set to edge past Andorran 20-year-old Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva 6-4 7-6.

Verdict

Joint is having a great year, but she's been consistently outclassed when running into the game's elite.

Anisimova, the World No. 9, is backed for a straight sets victory to move into R3.
