De Minaur has made a habit of making it through the early rounds of slams over the last few years, while he hasn't lost to a player ranked outside the top 100 at a major since 2020. The Australian is defending quarter-final points at this year's US Open and he will feel he's in good shape to at least replicate that showing over the next week or so in New York. Mochizuki meanwhile has qualified and made the second round at consecutive majors after also doing so at Wimbledon, where it took another big name in Karen Khachanov to stop him in five sets.
It's taking Mochizuki longer than expected to break through on the main tour, but recent signs suggest he's on his way. The 22-year-old is a supremely talented ball striker and has already won four matches at Flushing Meadows from qualifying. I think the total games line of 27.5 is a bit too low here, so backing De Minaur to win with at least 28 games.
Head To Head
This is the first career meeting between the pair.
Alex de Minaur Form
De Minaur comes into this clash with a 38-15 record on the season and back inside the top 10 at No. 8 in the world.
The Aussie remains one of the most consistent players on tour, reaching at least the R16 in seven of his last eight major appearances.
The 26-year-old is enjoying a solid summer in North American, saving championship points to win his 10th career title in Washington, while he was also a quarter-finalist at the Canada Masters.
Hoping to replicate his run to the quarter-finals in New York last year, de Minaur was untroubled in his opening round against countryman Chris O'Connell, easing to a 6-3 6-4 6-4 win.
Shintaro Mochizuki Form
Mochizuki enters this contest with a 2-2 record at tour-level, playing predominantly on the Challenger circuit as he looks to grind his way into the top 100.
Making that next step has proved difficult for the Japanese - he's 5-21 lifetime at tour level and has often been overpowered when making the step up.
However, there's signs that could be changing lately - Mochizuki also qualified at Wimbledon and pushed eventual quarter-finalist Karen Khachanov to five sets.
The 22-year-old had three great wins over Jurij Rodionov, Roman Burruchaga and Daniel Galan in US Open qualifying before taking out Hugo Gaston in straight sets in the first round of the main draw.

Verdict
De Minaur is the heavy favourite and should prevail, but Mochizuki is an extremely talented ball striker and has the ability to make this interesting.
Backing Mochizuki to do enough to push this Over 27.5 total games.
