Alex de Minaur vs Chris O'Connell Tips, Prediction & Live Stream - Demon to prevail in all-Aussie opener
In the first round of the US Open, it's an all-Australian duel as eighth-seeded Alex de Minaur meets Chris O'Connell. De Minaur, who has had an impressive season, winning his 10th ATP title and reaching high rounds in major tournaments, is expected to dominate. In contrast, O'Connell has struggled with injuries and form, making it challenging for him to present a strong challenge. Despite having a strong US Open track record, O'Connell's current inconsistency and fitness issues give De Minaur a clear advantage. Expect a straightforward victory for De Minaur.

De Minaur has put together another extremely solid season and he will be confident of defending his US Open quarter-final points, which he achieved on basically one leg last year after struggling with a hip injury. De Minaur has enjoyed a fruitful summer, winning his 10th career title in Washington and making the Toronto Masters quarter-finals, so it's been a perfect preparation.
The same can't really be said for O'Connell - he was forced to withdraw from Toronto and then retired last week in Winston Salem, so obviously he's not operating at full fitness. De Minaur is the last player you want to face if you're movement is less than 100%, so I'm backing the eighth seed to come away with a routine and straightforward victory here.
Head To Head
This will be the first tour-level meeting between the pair.
Alex de Minaur Form
De Minaur has put together a 37-15 record on the season, coming into the US Open at No. 8 in the world.
The Aussie has impressed with his consistency and ability to beat those ranked below him, while he continues to improve on the big stage as well.
De Minaur's highlights in 2025 include winning his 10th ATP title in Washington to kick off his North American summer, while he also finished runner-up in Rotterdam, made the semi-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters on clay and reached the Australian Open quarter-finals.
The 26-year-old also advanced to the Toronto Masters quarter-finals, but was bundled out in his Cincinnait opener by Reilly Opelka, which could be a blessing in disguise after playing a lot of tennis in the lead-up to New York.
De Minaur has a solid 18-8 record at the US Open, twice making quarter-finals in 2020 and 2024.
Chris O'Connell Form
It's been a tough season for O'Connell - he's posted a negative 10-17 record and is down at No. 81 in the world, which is around 30 spots off his career-high.
O'Connell hadn't won back-to-back matches since April before reaching the third round of the Toronto Masters, defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas along the way.
However, the Aussie was forced to withdraw from the tournament with injury and although he returned in Winston Salem and won a match against Roman Safiullin, he wasn't able to finish the tournament, retiring against Roberto Bautista Agut in the following round.
O'Connell's best Grand Slam record is at the US Open - he's gone 4-4 throughout his career, reaching the third round last year before running into Jannik Sinner.

Verdict
De Minaur simply does everything that little bit better than his countryman, while there's also injury concerns surrounding O'Connell.
I'd be surprised if De Minaur even comes close to dropping a set here.
