The 2025 Underwood Stakes shapes as a fascinating clash of proven performers and emerging challengers.

Sir Delius, a lightly raced Frankel entire, has quickly adapted to Australian racing. After contesting the 2024 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, he announced himself locally with a Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap win at Doomben before returning this spring with a narrow second to Lindermann over 1600m, a trip short of his best.

That September 6 run showed he had come back in terrific order, closing strongly despite the winner being well rated in front. With that platform, the rise to 1800m in the Underwood looks ideal as he continues to build towards the bigger spring features.

At $2.50 with Betr, Sir Delius heads the market for the 2025 Underwood Stakes.

Buckaroo ($3.50), last year’s Underwood winner, is another leading chance. He resumed with a strong third in the Memsie Stakes behind Treasurethe Moment, a run that confirmed he has returned in excellent order.

The rise to 1800m is exactly what he needs. His consistency at the highest level - including runner-up finishes in both the Turnbull Stakes and Caulfield Cup last spring - underlines his credentials as a genuine Group 1 performer.

Moira ($6) adds international intrigue. A dual Group 1 winner in the United States, both victories coming over longer trips, she has been steadily improving this preparation.

Her second-up effort at The Valley showed she is not far away, and the step up in distance is expected to bring out her best. With her proven record overseas, she adds depth and appeal to this year’s Underwood Stakes field.

Along with holding its own prestige as a Group 1 WFA feature, the Underwood Stakes is often a strong form race for the spring majors and that was evident last year, with Attrition, Without A Fight, Soulcombe and Duais all being produced from this event.

The Underwood Stakes was first run and won back in 1924 by Whittier, who ended up defending that title a year later.

An 1800m feature run under weight-for-age conditions, The Underwood Stakes gives the winner a ballot-exempt route into the Caulfield Cup.

With Phar Lap, Ajax. Bonecrusher, Octagonal and So You Think among the champions that have won this event, The Underwood Stakes is a big race in itself, along with being a key lead-up event for the spring majors.

Alligator Blood (2022 and 2023) and Buckaroo (2024) have won the last three editions of the Underwood Stakes.
