The 2026 Newmarket Handicap shapes as one of the highlights of the Flemington autumn carnival, bringing together a deep field of elite sprinters down the famous straight six.

The most exciting sprinter in Australia currently is Tentyris, a Godolphin colt who concluded his spring campaign with a brilliant Group 1 victory in the Coolmore Stud Stakes.

He was then scratched behind the barriers for the Champions Sprint seven days later, and with that run scheduled on a testing track, the absence may well have been a blessing.

Tentyris could not have been more impressive first-up when claiming the Black Caviar Lightning, producing an electric finish from off the speed.

The youngster now needs to give weight to most rivals, which is never easy in a Newmarket Handicap as a three-year-old.

However, he is comfortably the class runner in the race and clearly the one to beat.

2026 Newmarket Handicap Value Bet - Wodeton

Wodeton has burned punters with a long run of outs since a brilliant debut victory, however he has still been mostly competitive.

Aside from his Caulfield Guineas attempt in the spring as favourite, the 1600m simply proved too far on that occasion.

He went as well as anything behind Tempted in the Eskimo Prince Stakes, with that filly going on to win last week’s Surround Stakes.

Napoleonic finished second in that race before going on to finish runner-up in the Hobartville Stakes and is now a single-figure chance for the Canterbury Stakes.

A recent trial up the Flemington straight looked bright and, down in the weights with 50kg, Wodeton could run a big race at odds.
