Although the Caulfield Guineas is too deep of an event to suggest that there's a match race, we will see the star colts of Melbourne and Sydney clash via three-time Group 1 winner Militarize and the unbeaten Steparty.
Militarize (barrier 12) shaded the Victorian in the early markets for the 2023 Caulfield Guineas, a Chris Waller-trained colt that contests this Group 1 third-up after arriving late to take out a thrilling edition of the Golden Rose on September 23.
While he hasn't raced in Melbourne, the son of Dundeel rounded out his two-year-old season with victory in the Champagne Stakes, so running out 1600m won't be an issue.
Steparty (barrier 7) made it five from five when saluting in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude on September 23 and given the circumstances, it was arguably his best performance to date.
After settling further back than usual, the Paul Preusker-trained three-year-old sustained a long run to win that key Melbourne lead-up.
Off his unlucky return was against older rivals in the Group 1 Winx Stakes, the late betting move for King Colorado (barrier 8) ahead of the Golden Rose was no surprise and while that was a sound effort, staying at 1400m second-up worked against him.
He did win the Group 1 JJ Atkins over the mile at start three back in June and he'll be suited by the rise in distance here.
The Maher & Eustace stable also prepares Griff (barrier 15), Scentify (barrier 5) and Southport Tycoon (barrier 4), while Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes have dual representation via Limburg (barrier 9) and Copacabana (barrier 6).
With a stylish debut win followed by a narrow defeat in the Group 2 Stutt Stakes, the lightly raced Verdad (barrier 14) creates plenty of interest, as does the talented Wolfy (barrier 11) who arrives off back-to-back victories.
Little Brose (barrier 10), Veight (barrier 1) and Scheelite (barrier 13) are among the contenders that come through the Caulfield Guineas Prelude.
15 runners make up the final field for the 2023 Caulfield Guineas.

Caulfield Guineas Winners
One of the oldest Group One races in Melbourne history, the Caulfield Guineas was first run in 1881.
Originally run at Flemington during the War-time period, the Caulfield Guineas has since made its home at Caulfield and it has been the crowning achievement for numerous stallions which have gone on to have lucrative stud careers.
A mile journey since its inception, the Caulfield Guineas was given Group 1 status in 1979, when many of Australia’s top races became Group 1 level. That year, it was taken out by Runaway Kid after Manikato had won the year prior.
Known as a stallion-making race, the Guineas has been won by many of Australia’s best stallions, including the likes of All Too Hard, Lonhro and Redoute’s Choice.
It’s often a good reference for future betting guides, including the Victoria Derby. as Caulfield Guineas winners have gone on to win the Derby on 16 occasions, but the most recent came in 2002 with Helenus.
Ole Kirk (2020), Anamoe (2021) and Golden Mile (2022) have won the last three editions of the Caulfield Guineas.
