World No. 1 Jannik Sinner will begin his quest for a Roland Garros title by competing against Arthur Rinderknech. Sinner enters the match with an impressive record, having won 26 out of his last 27 matches. His recent performances include a finals appearance at the Rome Masters, although he fell short against Carlos Alcaraz. In contrast, Rinderknech’s form has been poor, with only four tour-level wins this year. Sinner is anticipated to have an easy match, covering a -9.5 games line to advance to the second round.

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner begins his pursuit of a maiden Roland Garros title when he faces Arthur Rinderknech in the opening round on Monday night.

Sinner returned from a three-month suspension in successful fashion, reaching the final of the Rome Masters, but he did lose a fourth consecutive match against Carlos Alcaraz, meaning he is regarded as the second-favourite for the title over the next fortnight. Sinner has won 103 of his last 112 matches dating back to October 2023 and 26 of his last 27 overall - it would be one of the biggest shocks in modern tennis history if he were to bomb out in the opening round against Rinderknech, who has been in terrible form this season.

Rinderknech has won just four tour-level matches coming into Roland Garros, is 0-5 vs top five players (winning just one set) and has lost in the opening round in five of his seven previous French Open campaigns. This should be a walk in the park for Sinner as he breezes into Round 2.

Head To Head

Sinner leads 2-1. Rinderknech won their first meeting on the clay of Lyon back in 2021, but Sinner has won the last two encounters 6-4 6-2 in the 2021 Antwerp quarter-finals and 6-3 7-6 in the 2022 ATP Cup.

Jannik Sinner Form

Sinner comes into this clash with a 12-1 record on the season, suffering his first defeat of the year in the Rome Masters final a couple of weeks ago.

The Italian has dominated tennis over the last 18 months, but most of his good work has come on hardcourt.

Indeed, Sinner has only ever won one clay court title and that came back in 2022 in Umag. Sinner has made great strides on the surface though, making the French Open semi-finals last year (losing to Alcaraz in five) and of course the Rome final recently.

Sinner didn't miss a step, conquering the likes of Francisco Cerundolo, Casper Ruud and Tommy Paul on his way to the final, but once again Alcaraz proved too strong in a 6-7 1-6 defeat.

The 23-year-old will be attempting to win his third consecutive Grand Slam title after picking up the silverware at the US and Australian Opens.

Arthur Rinderknech Form

It's been a difficult season for Rinderknech, who comes into this contest with a 4-13 record at tour-level and down at No. 75 in the world.

Rinderknech hasn't won back-to-back matches at any level since the 2024 Paris Masters and will almost certainly be suffering a sixth opening round defeat at Roland Garros on Monday.

The Frenchman did at least manage to register a win last week in Geneva, beating Miomir Kecmanovic before going down to eventual finalist Hubert Hurkacz.

As mentioned, Rinderknech is 0-5 lifetime against top five players and has only ever won one set against that elite group of players.

Verdict

Sinner has won 26 of his last 27 matches and shouldn't have any trouble extending that record against Rinderknech, who has won just four tour-level matches in 2025.

Backing Sinner to cover his -9.5 games line in victory.
