Hubert Hurkacz vs Joao Fonseca Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Forget the main showcourts, the match of the opening round could take place out on Court 7 as Hubert Hurkacz and rising teenage star Joao Fonseca collide.

Former top 10 player Hurkacz is coming off a resurgent run to the final of Geneva last week, while Fonseca has been touted as a future World No. 1 and multiple major winner. Scheduled late in the day, this has all the makings of a classic five-set encounter.

Hurkacz is no stranger to long marathon matches at the majors - in fact, his 2023 Roland Garros campaign saw all three of his matches go the distance, while his R16 run in 2024 saw three of his four matches go at least four sets. Fonseca's sample size is of course much smaller - this is his debut at Roland Garros, but his first slam at the Australian Open earlier this year saw him take the scalp of Andrey Rublev before falling to Lorenzo Sonego in five.

Fonseca has continued to impress, but he is down on confidence heading into the French Open having lost his last three matches. Hurkacz is obviously the more experienced player and has restored some form and confidence with his Geneva runner-up showing. I'm backing Over 36.5 total games as the best bet, with smaller stakes on Hurkacz as the underdog and the big Pole to prevail in five.

Head To Head

This will be the first career meeting between the pair.

Hubert Hurkacz Form

Hurkacz comes into this encounter with a 14-10 record on the season as he continues his bid to climb back up the rankings.

Injuries have caused Hurkacz to drop to a current ranking of No. 28 after reaching a career-high mark of No. 6 this time last year.

The Pole continues to battle physical issues, but recent signs have been encouraging.

After making the quarter-finals of the Rome Masters, Hurkacz put together a solid run to the final of Geneva last week, where it took an inspired Novak Djokovic gunning for a 100th career title to stop him.

Despite clay being his least preferred surface, Hurkacz has performed okay at Roland Garros in the past, twice making the fourth round - including last year, where he went down to Grigor Dimitrov.

Joao Fonseca Form

Fonseca has a 10-7 record at tour-level for the season as he well and truly looks to leave the Challenger circuit in the rear view mirror.

That said, Fonseca has picked up two Challenger titles in 2025 in Canberra and Phoenix, which have contributed to his current ranking of No. 65.

The 18-year-old of course made headlines when he stunned Andrey Rublev in the opening round of the Australian Open, along with capturing the Next Gen ATP Finals title at the end of 2024 and winning his maiden ATP crown in Buenos Aires in February.

Fonseca also picked up match wins at Indian Wells and Miami, but his transition to European clay hasn't been as fruitful as he'd want.

Indeed, Fonseca has won just once and arrives in Paris on a three-match losing streak, going down to Tommy Paul in Madrid, Jesper de Jong in Estoril and Fabian Marozsan in Rome.

Verdict

I can't see either player winning this in routine fashion. Hurkacz has a history of long matches at Roland Garros and this is shaping as another.

Fonseca will provide the hot shots and highlight real moments, but I still have my doubts over his ability to stay consistent over five sets. Hurkacz' serve is a great neutraliser too and can also lead to some lottery tiebreaks. Over 36.5 total games is the best bet, with Hurkacz good value as the underdog in a long match.
