Dellien, known for his clay-court skills and historic win over Thiem, is a formidable opponent. Monfils is competing at his 18th French Open after debuting all the way back in 2005, with his best result coming back in 2008 when he made the semi-finals, while he was also a quarter-finalist in 2009, 2011 and 2014. Now 38 years of age, Monfils is still playing at a high level, although he comes into this contest in questionable physical condition after some recent injuries.
Dellien is a classic clay courter and actually owns a big win at Roland Garros over former two-time runner-up Dominic Thiem in 2022. The Bolivian loves a scrap and this will be one of the biggest matches of his career under the lights of Court Philippe Chatrier. I believe Dellien can take a set - Monfils hasn't won a match in straights at Roland Garros since 2019, with his last two first rounds going five and four. Ever the showman, Monfils in a five-set thriller is where the value is at here.
Head To Head
This will be the first career meeting between the pair.
Gael Monfils Form
Monfils comes into this clash with a 16-7 record on the season, but unfortunately half of those victories came across two tournaments in January.
Indeed, Monfils compiled an eight-match winning streak after winning the Auckland final and reaching the Australian Open fourth round, defeating Taylor Fritz before going down to Ben Shelton.
As has so often been the case in the twilight of his career, Monfils' body has let him down - especially in the lead-up to Roland Garros, which has seen him withdraw in Madrid and pull out of Rome.
The 38-year-old returned in Hamburg last week, but suffered a straight sets opening round defeat to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
Monfils obviously doesn't have many more French Opens left in him and he will be hoping to at least replicate his effort last year, which saw him beat Thiago Seyboth Wild in the opening round before falling to Lorenzo Musetti.
Hugo Dellien Form
Dellien arrives at Roland Garros with an unimpressive 2-3 record at tour-level, spending most of 2025 on the Challenger circuit.
Despite having the chance to compete in ATP events last week, Dellien opted to play a Challenger event in Skopje, where he lost in the semi-finals against No. 186 Jay Clarke.
However, despite the lack of tour-level wins, Dellien remains inside the top 100 at No. 90 in the world, helped in part by a rather fortuitous run to the third round of the Rome Masters as a lucky loser earlier this month.
The Bolivian has a 3-10 record in the first round of Grand Slams, but two of those victories have come at Roland Garros.

Verdict
Monfils hasn't won a match in straight sets at Roland Garros since 2019 and he's under an injury cloud at 38 years of age - this is unlikely to be routine.
With that in mind, Dellien to simply win one set is okay value, while Monfils to delight the home crowd with a late-night five-set win looks tasty.
