Carlos Alcaraz vs Tommy Paul Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Carlos Alcaraz continues his bid for back-to-back Roland Garros titles when he locks horns with Tommy Paul in the quarter-finals on Tuesday night.

Alcaraz is on an 11-match winning streak at Roland Garros and has been dominant once again on clay this season, putting together an intimidating 19-1 record on the surface, highlighted by two titles in Monte Carlo and Rome. Paul meanwhile has enjoyed a fruitful tournament, making a maiden French Open quarter-final and confirming a return to the top 10.

It would be a monumental upset if Alcaraz lost this match, but again, the Spaniard rarely does things the easy way. Out of Alcaraz's last 21 Grand Slam match wins, 15 have gone over 30.5 total games, signalling some sort of struggle. Alcaraz's last three matches this tournament have seen him drop a set against Ben Shelton, Fabian Marozsan and Damir Dzumhur - and given Paul's tendency to trouble him in previous meetings, another interesting encounter could take shape here.

Head To Head

Alcaraz leads 4-2, winning their most-recent clash on this very court in the Paris Olympics quarter-finals last year by a 6-3 7-6 score.

Carlos Alcaraz Form

Alcaraz heads into this showdown with a 34-5 record on the season, instantly raising his level and improving his consistency when stepping back onto clay.

Apart from a title at the 500-level event in Rotterdam, Alcaraz's beginning to the year wasn't really anything to write home about by his lofty standards.

However, the former World No. 1 has predictably gone to another level on clay, winning 19 of his 20 matches on the surface, including claiming titles in Monte Carlo and Rome, along with reaching the final in Barcelona, where an injury contributed in a loss to Holger Rune.

Alcaraz remains the title favourite at Roland Garros after demolishing his main rival Jannik Sinner in the Rome final, but the concentration lapses remain an issue, with the Spaniard dropping a set in his last three wins over Marozsan, Dzumhur and Shelton. Alcaraz also faced a set point in the opener in his hard-fought 7-6(8), 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 over Shelton in the R16.

Tommy Paul Form

It hasn't really been an overly spectacular season for Paul so far - he's posted a 25-8 record on the year and has yet to win a title, while he's also been struck down by form and fitness issues throughout.

However, Paul has put it all together lately, making the semi-finals of Rome before reaching his first French Open quarter-final.

It's been a big battle for Paul to make it this far, needing four sets in his opening round against lucky loser Elmer Moller before overcoming Marton Fucsovics and Karen Khachanov in five sets.

Paul saved his best performance of the tournament for the R16, where he breezed past Alexei Popyrin 6-3 6-3 6-3.

Verdict

Alcaraz is the deserved heavy favourite, but the Spaniard has dropped a set in his last three matches and Paul has demonstrated an ability to trouble him in the past.
