Things are looking pretty good for Alcaraz right now - the highest-ranked opponent left in his half of the draw is eighth seed Lorenzo Musetti, who he is projected to meet in the semi-finals. It looks to be a very manageable draw for the defending champion, which should ensure he's in peak physical condition for a potential final showdown against potentially either Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev or Novak Djokovic.
Of course Alcaraz can't afford to look too far ahead, but I think this is a complete mismatch. Dzumhur has done a great job of rebuilding his ranking to get back inside the top 100, but he's lost his last eight matches against top 20 matches and doesn't have a top five victory since 2017. The Bosnian just doesn't have the weapons to trouble Alcaraz and he's coming off a mentally and physically draining win over French hope Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the previous round. In fact, the only match Alcaraz has lost on clay this season came in the Barcelona final, where he picked up an injury that forced his withdrawal from Madrid.
Alcaraz opened his Roland Garros title defence with a straight sets victory over qualifier Giulio Zeppieri in straight sets before navigating his way past the dangerous Fabian Marozsan, dropping the second set but demolishing the Hungarian in the other three to emerge a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 winner.
Damir Dzumhur Form
Dzumhur comes into this encounter with a 13-10 record at tour-level for the season, improving his ranking from No. 97 in mid-February to a current mark of No. 69.
The 33-year-old has enjoyed a fruitful clay swing, making the semi-finals of the ATP event in Bucharest and the third round of the Madrid Masters.
Not content with those results, Dzumhur has registered a pair of four-set victories to reach the third round of Roland Garros, toppling Thiago Agustin Tirante and the big-serving Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
It's the first time Dzumhur has been to the R32 of a major since 2018 and he's now trying to make the R16 for the first time in his career - although he has a 4-19 record vs top 10 players and never defeated a player ranked in the top three.
