Alexei Popyrin vs Alejandro Tabilo Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Alexei Popyrin will be aiming to reach the third round of the French Open for the first time when he comes up against Alejandro Tabilo on Wednesday.

Seeded 25th at Roland Garros this season, Popyrin will be hoping to finally make an impact in the main draw of a tournament he won as a junior back in 2017. Popyrin was 1-6 at Roland Garros before he benefitted from Yoshihito Nishioka's retirement in the opening round. On the back of what has been an overall tough season, I find it hard to justify Popyrin as a clear favourite like the bookies have done here.

Part of that has to do with Tabilo's horrendous season to date, but the Chilean remains a dangerous clay courter who peaked at No. 19 in the world last year. Tabilo beat Novak Djokovic in straight sets in Monte Carlo to launch the European clay swing and also claimed a solid five-set win over talented French hope Arthur Cazaux in the first round. I think this will be a four or five-setter, with Tabilo holding all the value.

Head To Head

This will be the first career meeting between the pair.

Alexei Popyrin Form

Popyrin comes into this contest with a negative 9-11 record on the season, with seven of those victories coming during the clay swing.

That highlights just how poor Popyrin's start to the season was, which is surprising considering his success on hardcourt at the end of 2024, where he won his maiden Masters 1000 title in Canada and beat Djokovic at the US Open.

The Aussie restored some confidence with a nice run to the quarter-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters, defeating Casper Ruud along the way, while he was also a quarter-finalist in Geneva last week, going down to a resurgent Cameron Norrie.

Technically, Popyrin is still without a completed match win at Roland Garros since his debut campaign in 2019 after Nishioka pulled the pin in their first round clash while trailing two sets.

Alejandro Tabilo Form

Tabilo has been in even worse form in 2025, coming into this clash with a 5-10 record at tour-level and dropping down to No. 61 in the rankings.

Cracking the top 20 for the first time less than 12 months ago, it's been a dramatic fall from grace for Tabilo, who has battled poor form and off-court family issues in this period.

The Chilean actually didn't play after beating Stan Wawrinka and Djokovic to reach the Monte Carlo R16, missing big tournaments in Madrid and Rome and returning only for the French Open.

Tabilo managed to secure his first ever match win at Roland Garros, overcoming French wildcard Cazaux in five sets.

Verdict

Popyrin doesn't have a completed match win at Roland Garros since 2019, while Tabilo has the talent and natural clay court ability to beat a lot of top players on his day.

I simply can't justify Popyrin as the clear favourite given his overall season. Backing a close contest with Over 37.5 total games and Tabilo has value in closing it out in five.
