De Minaur has established himself as a genuine top 10 player over the last 12 months and will be aiming to reach the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the fifth straight major having began his current streak at Roland Garros 12 months ago. De Minaur conquered Daniil Medvedev before going down to eventual finalist Alexander Zverev in Paris last year and will be hoping to replicate that sort of run here.

The Aussie has a potentially challenging opening assignment in the shape of Djere, who is a very experienced and capable clay courter. Seventeen of Djere's 20 total wins for 2025 have come on clay and it's taken Carlos Alcaraz to stop him in his last two tournaments, so it's clearly taking a big performance to stop him on this surface at the moment. The cool and heavy conditions don't really suit de Minaur's game and Djere has the power to do some damage. I think the Serbian can catch Demon cold and snatch a set, but you have to side with the Aussie to ultimately find the solutions and come away with the win.

Head To Head

De Minaur leads 3-0, but Djere has been able to take a set in their last two meetings, which came on the grass of s-Hertogenbosch in 2023 and Queen's Club in 2021.

Alex de Minaur Form

De Minaur comes into this clash with a 26-10 record on the season, cementing his top 10 status but still yet to win a title in 2025.

The Aussie is one of the most consistent players on tour and has developed a reputation for rarely losing to lower-ranked players.

It's been a fruitful clay court swing for de Minaur - he's won nine of his 13 matches, highlighted by a run to the Monte Carlo Masters semi-finals, where he was edged out by Lorenzo Musetti.

De Minaur's last two Masters 1000 events ended in the R16, going down to Musetti again in Madrid before falling to Tommy Paul in Rome.

The 26-year-old entered new ground at Roland Garros last year by making the quarter-finals, with each of his seven previous appearances seeing him eliminated in the first or second round.

Laslo Djere Form

Djere heads into this showdown with a very solid 12-4 record at tour-level so far this season.

The Serbian was forced to undergo surgery last year, causing his ranking to drop to as low as No. 129, but he hasn't wasted much time in rebuilding his ranking to a current mark of No. 59.

Opting to compete in the South American Golden Swing on clay in February, Djere made the semi-finals in Buenos Aires before winning his third ATP title in Santiago, defeating Francisco Cerundolo and Sebastian Baez along the way.

Djere has continued his good form on clay in Europe - in his last three events, it's taken Alcaraz to eliminate him, while he also had to withdraw from Madrid ahead of a scheduled match with Daniil Medvedev.

The 29-year-old beat Tomas Martin Etcheverry and Alex Michelsen in straight sets in Rome to make the third round, while his best result at Roland Garros were two third round appearances in 2019 and 2021.

Verdict

Djere is a tough opening round opponent - as mentioned, it's taken Alcaraz to beat him in his last two clay events and he won an ATP title on this surface earlier this season.

Djere has also taken a set off de Minaur in their last two meetings - this could be another tricky contest for the Aussie, but the ninth seed should be able to grind out a win in four or five sets.
