Shelton has a proven ability to raise his level on the big stage and the young American is expected to overcome Sonego, who is competing in his maiden Grand Slam quarter-final. Sonego has put together a career-best major tournament, but he's lost 23 of his last 28 matches against top 20 players, so it would be a shock if he was able to improve that record in the pressure-cooker environment of a major quarter-final. Both players have seen a first-set tiebreak in two of their four matches so far this tournament, so there's some value to be found there, but ultimately Shelton is backed to emerge victorious and reach a maiden Australian Open semi-final.

Despite being one of the hottest young prospects in the game and having already made a Grand Slam semi-final, Shelton has somewhat flown under the radar so far in Melbourne.
Perhaps it was the exploits of Next Gen stars Joao Fonseca and Learner Tien that overshadowed Shelton's progress through the draw, but nevertheless, the American is back into the Australian Open quarter-finals after making it this far on his debut back in 2023.
After beating compatriot Brandon Nakashima in straight sets in the opening round, Shelton has dropped sets in his last three matches, beating Pablo Carreno Busta and Lorenzo Musetti in four sets.
Shelton was leading veteran Gael Monfils by two-sets-to-one in the fourth round when his 38-year-old opponent was forced to retire due to fatigue.

Sonego has become something of a Next Gen slayer this Australian Open, compiling an eye-catching run to a maiden Grand Slam quarter-final.
The talent has always been there for Sonego, but he's one of the most inconsistent players on tour and that's restricted him from making deep runs at the majors throughout his career.
However, Sonego relished the opportunity to take down the hype of young guns Fonseca and Tien, defeating the former in a five-set thriller and taking out the latter in four sets in the R16.
Sonego also took out former Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka in four sets in the opening round, along with the dangerous Fabian Marozsan in the third round (also in four sets).
The Italian has another opportunity to conquer a rising star of the sport, but Sonego has only won five of his last 28 matches against top 20 opponents.
