Observer endured some early spring misfortune, which included a luckless third in the Caulfield Guineas, before atoning with back-to-back victories, including the Group 1 Victoria Derby.

Despite those successes over longer trips, the Godolphin colt has shown the versatility and class to be competitive back at shorter distances, which was evident in his February 7 return victory over 1400m at Caulfield.

At $2 with Ladbrokes, Observer heads the 2026 Australian Guineas market, while Sixties is the $2.80 second favourite.

The Chris Waller-trained colt has some strong early season references, highlighted by a Group 3 victory over Autumn Boy, the subsequent Caulfield Guineas winner.

Sixties looks to have come back even stronger, beating older rivals on return before a Group 3 success in the CS Hayes Stakes, a key lead-up to the Australian Guineas.

Rounding out the single-figure hopes is Planet Red ($5), who caught the eye first-up in the Autumn Stakes when runner-up, having been spelled after a second-place finish in the Caulfield Guineas.

Australian Guineas Winners

The Australian Guineas is Melbourne’s premier three-year-old race of the autumn carnival, with the Group 1 contested over the mile at Flemington Racecourse.

A relatively modern addition to the Australian calendar, the race was first run in 1986, gained Group 1 status just one year later, and was known as the Australasian Guineas until 2004.

Despite its shorter history, the Australian Guineas boasts a strong honour roll, with Zabeel, Mahogany, Reset, Apache Cat, Miss Finland, Mystic Journey and Alligator Blood among its notable past winners.

Recent editions have been won by Legarto (2023), Southport Tycoon (2024), and Feroce (2025), continuing the race’s reputation as a key launching pad for elite three-year-old's.
