Alcaraz is aiming to become just the third man this century after Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic to win three Wimbledon titles in a row. The Spaniard is playing at his peak level right now, reaching the final in his last five consecutive tournaments and winning four of them - including that classic French Open final and his only grass warm-up event at Queen's Club. The 38-year-old Fognini basically has no chance here.
However, the enigmatic Italian is nearing the end of his career, so this is a huge moment. Fognini always raised his level and care factor for big matches, so he will be up for this one. Fognini actually has a very solid 11-3 record in Wimbledon first rounds and scored a top 10 victory over Casper Ruud last year. Alcaraz, for all his dominance, was dragged into battles in all of his Queen's Club matches, while he's failed to cover a +9.5 games line in his last 13 Wimbledon outings. Not the most confident bet I've ever placed, admittedly, but I'm going to back Fognini to cover in his Wimbledon swansong.
Head To Head
Alcaraz leads 2-0, with both matches coming on clay. Fognini put up a good fight before falling 67(5) 62 64 in the R16 of Rio in 2023 in the most-recent clash.
Carlos Alcaraz Form
Alcaraz brings a tour-best 42-5 record for 2025 into Wimbledon, successfully defending his French Open title and winning five trophies overall.
It's been another stellar European summer for Alcaraz, who of course secured the Roland Garros-Wimbledon double in 2024.
The Spaniard's dominance on both clay and grass has been something to behold, with Alcaraz also winning 25 of his last 26 matches on grass dating back to 2022.
Despite the short turnaround from his epic Roland Garros final comeback victory over Jannik Sinner, Alcaraz managed to battle his way to a second Queen's Club title, defeating Jiri Lehecka in three sets in the final.
Alcaraz now returns to Wimbledon, where he has won the last two editions, including a straight sets demolition of Novak Djokovic in last year's final.
Fabio Fognini Form
Fognini hasn't won a tour-level match so far in 2025, coming into this clash down at No. 138 in the world with a 0-6 record.
The 38-year-old is retiring shortly and will no doubt enjoy one last big match against a future Hall of Famer on the iconic Wimbledon lawns.
Still capable of some spellbinding tennis, Fognini won't have the consistency to challenge Alcaraz for the upset, but he will no doubt make the highlight reels in some form.
Fognini lost all three of his grass matches leading into Wimbledon at Stuttgart, Nottingham and Mallorca, but as mentioned, he's compiled a strong 11-3 record in the first round of Wimbledon throughout his career and obviously has nothing to lose here.

Verdict
Obviously tough to find value in a match where H2H betting is suspended at some bookies due to Alcaraz being such an overwhelming favourite.
In saying that, Alcaraz hasn't covered a big -9.5 games line in his last 13 Wimbledon matches and wasn't at his best during his Queen's Club title run. One last hurrah for Fognini and the Italian to cover is my play here.
