ATP Washington Outright Winner Tips & Predictions
The North American hardcourt summer begins this week, headlined by the ATP 500 tournament in Washington - and we've made our outright winner tips.
Australia's Alex de Minaur is the top seed and defending champion, but has a very tough opening round draw against a resurgent Stefanos Tsitsipas, who has won 12 of the 13 previous meetings between the pair.
There's more Australian flavour in the top half of the draw, with 17-year-old Cruz Hewitt - who made it through qualifying to feature in his first tour-level main draw - facing Marcos Giron in the first round, with the winner to face either De Minaur or Tsitsipas.
But in terms of a winner, I like a couple of homegrown American players - one of the tournament favourites and another offering more value.

Shelton looks perfectly positioned at the bottom of the draw for at least a run to the semi-finals - and from there, he's obviously a huge contender.
Shelton has reached the semi-finals in his last two appearances in Washington and has a good draw to make it three. He should be too good for Martin Damm and the winner of Ugo Humbert and Andres Martin, which could potentially set up a quarter-final with Frances Tiafoe - someone he has a 3-1 record against, including beating his fellow American in Washington last year.
Admittedly, Shelton hasn't been in great form over the last couple of months, but I think that gives him added fuel and motivation to perform here. It's the start of the summer and Shelton thrives playing under the lights on hardcourt in front of home fans.
The 23-year-old won his maiden Masters 1000 title on hardcourt in Canada last year and has the fitness and physicality to endure the unforgiving heat and humidity in the American capital.
Shelton's two projected seeds in the semi-finals are Arthur Fils and Lorenzo Musetti - both of whom have been dealing with injury problems throughout the grass and clay swings. Rafael Jodar is the dangerous floater in the third section and it wouldn't be surprising at all to see the young Spaniard make a run to the semi-finals.
But overall, I think Shelton really should make the final from the bottom half - with Fritz, de Minaur or Paul the most likely opponents in the final.
Potentially crucially, Shelton has also won three of his last four meetings with Fritz - including two finals this year in Dallas and Stuttgart.
Brandon Nakashima

However, I do want to have a smaller stake on Nakashima from the top half at $29.
Nakashima made the quarter-finals of Washington last year before going down to eventual champion de Minaur.
The pair could meet again in the last eight, but Nakashima won't be intimidated this time having beat the Australian recently on his run to the Queen's Club semi-finals - another ATP 500 tournament on grass.
Nakashima has a nice opening round draw against Tomas Martin Etcheverry, who has been playing the post-Wimbledon clay swing across Europe and now makes the quick transition to North American hardcourts.
I'd expect Nakashima to win that one and a possible meeting with Jakub Mensik in the second round is winnable as well - the Czech remains very up and down and could be vulnerable upon his return to hardcourt. And de Minaur might not even make the quarter-finals given he's got bogey opponent Tsitsipas in R1.
So all up, Nakashima looks a strong chance to make the semi-finals - that's where things would get considerably more challenging against potential opponents like Fritz, Paul, Learner Tien and Jack Draper - but the American is worth a small stake at those odds.
