Ten years after beating Novak Djokovic to win the US Open title, Wawrinka will complete his Grand Slam journey in New York after being awarded a late wildcard into the tournament. The 41-year-old will retire at the end of the year in Basel, but will be hoping for one last memorable moment in the majors.
Berrettini meanwhile continues to struggle with injuries, playing just three tournaments since being forced to retire in the Roland Garros quarter-finals.
The Italian played Wawrinka in one of those tournaments, edging out the veteran in four tiebreak sets at Wimbledon - and I think a similar sort of contest could play out at Flushing Meadows.
Wawrinka is on a five-match losing streak and obviously just doesn't have the physical capability to sustain a high level of tennis - but he is still showcasing flashes of brilliance, which should be enough for him to win at least one set.

Unfortunately, Berrettini just can't seem to get his body right.
It appeared as if the Italian was finally starting to restore some momentum on tour after crushing Daniil Medvedev 6-0 6-0 in Monte Carlo and making the quarter-finals of Roland Garros.
However, Berrettini was forced to retire in the second set of that French Open quarter-final against Matteo Arnaldi and he's only competed in three tournaments since.
A third round run at Wimbledon was encouraging as Berrettini beat Wawrinka and Arthur Fils before going down to Grigor Dimitrov in four. But the 30-year-old has gone 1-2 on hardcourt this summer, with his only win coming over World No. 111 Titouan Droguet in Cincinnati.
Berrettini made the semi-finals of the US Open all the way back in 2019 and also reached the quarter-finals in 2021-22.

It was a great start to the season for Wawrinka as he made the third round of the Australian Open, but he hasn't been able to beat a player ranked higher than No. 80 since early February.
Wawrinka was still able to be competitive at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, where he went down in four sets to Jesper de Jong and Berrettini.
The 41-year-old only played one lead-in tournament to the US Open on hardcourt, which resulted in a second round defeat in Cancun to Roman Safiullin.
The Swiss was initially controversially overlooked for a farewell US Open wildcard, but was ultimately awarded one after American Patrick Kypson withdrew injured.
Wawrinka has won 46 matches at Flushing Meadows throughout his career, including winning the title in 2016 when he beat Djokovic in the final.
