Jannik Sinner continues his quest for a third consecutive Australian Open title as he faces James Duckworth in the second round. Sinner remains formidable, boasting an impressive record of 93-6 on hardcourts, and has not lost to any player other than Carlos Alcaraz on this surface since 2024. Duckworth, however, has never surpassed the second round at his home slam or defeated a top-five player. Based on Sinner's current form and statistics, he is predicted to secure another decisive victory, extending his ongoing winning streak.

Jannik Sinner vs James Duckworth Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Jannik Sinner continues his Australian Open title defence when he squares off against Aussie wildcard James Duckworth in the second round on Thursday night inside Rod Laver Arena.

Sinner is bidding to become just the second man in the Open Era after Novak Djokovic to win three consecutive Australian Open titles and you'd be a brave man to bet against him over the remaining fortnight in Melbourne. The Italian is as dominant as ever, winning 93 of his last 99 matches on hardcourt and last losing to someone other than Carlos Alcaraz on the surface back at Canada 2024. Sinner is riding a 15-match winning streak at the Australian Open and that almost certainly extends to 16 here. Duckworth has made the most out of his wildcard, winning a gruelling five-setter against youngster Dino Prizmic in his opening round, but it goes without saying this is a seismic step up in class.

Duckworth has never been beyond the second round at his home slam and he's never beaten a top five player. Sinner is as ruthless as they come and he's absolutely obliterated opponents like Duckworth at the slams lately. In a match that offers little value, taking Sinner to cover his -9.5 games line appeals.
  • Sinner is 93-6 on hardcourt over the last two years
  • Sinner hasn't lost to anyone other than Alcaraz on hardcourt since 2024
  • Sinner has won his last 15 Australian Open matches
  • Sinner is 37-1 vs players outside the top 85 at Grand Slam level
  • Sinner has covered a -9.5 games line in his last four Grand Slam matches vs players outside the top 85
  • Duckworth is 0-5 vs top five players
  • Duckworth is 0-5 in Australian Open second round matches
  • Sinner is 18-2 in Grand Slam second round matches

Sinner vs Duckworth Head To Head

Currently 2-1 to Sinner at tour-level, but they haven't played since the Italian became the force he is today.

Jannik Sinner Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 1-0
  • 2025 Record: 58-6
  • Australian Open Record: 23-4
  • Grand Slam Record: 88-20
  • Current Ranking: No. 2
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 1

The numbers and record speak for itself - Sinner has more than established himself as the dominant force alongside Alcaraz on tour, with the pair being dubbed the new 'Big 2' and taking over from the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

Despite his three-month suspension for doping offences, it was another successful year for Sinner, who defended his Australian Open title before claiming a maiden Wimbledon crown. He did suffer tough defeats to Alcaraz in the French and US Open finals, but bounced back to secure the year-end silverware at the ATP Finals at home in Turin, defeating the Spaniard in the final.

Nevertheless, that triumph wasn't enough to regain the No. 1 ranking, but he'll have ample opportunity for that over the next few months as he has nothing to defend from after the Australian Open to Rome.

Sinner officially launched his 2026 season on Tuesday night, leading Hugo Gaston 6-2 6-1 before the Frenchman suddenly retired.

James Duckworth Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 1-2
  • 2025 Record: 8-12
  • Australian Open Record: 6-12
  • Grand Slam Record: 12-38
  • Current Ranking: No. 88
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 46 (2022)

It wasn't a great season for Duckworth last year, but some good late results saw him cling onto his place in the top 100.

Duckworth's best tour-level result came in Almaty, where after qualifying for the main draw, he advanced to the semi-finals, beating the likes of Gabriel Diallo and Flavio Cobolli before going down in three sets to eventual champion Daniil Medvedev.

The Aussie veteran proceeded to win the Sydney Challenger and make the semi-finals of Playford to close his season, doing enough to secure the Australian Open wildcard for the player who earns the most points during that Challenger period.

Duckworth launched his year with first round exits at both Brisbane and Adelaide, but got off the mark with a gritty five-set win over Croatian lucky loser Dino Prizmic in the first round of the Australian Open, coming back from two sets to one down to prevail 7-6(4) 3-6 1-6 7-5 6-3.
