Sinner remains as dominant as ever on hardcourt and at the Australian Open, where he is unbeaten since 2023, while his last completed defeat on this surface to a player other than Carlos Alcaraz came all the way back at the Canada Masters in 2024. In that regard, he couldn't have hoped for a better tournament. However, Djokovic was getting outplayed all over the court by Musetti and in his own words, 'would have been going home' if not for the injury. Sinner is obviously at a completely different level and the only thing seemingly capable of stopping him is the heat. But this match will be played at night. Sinner has won 12 of the last 13 sets these two have played dating back to the 2024 Australian Open and there's really no reason to think anything changes here - backing the two-time defending champion in for another routine victory.

Despite missing three months of last year due to suspension, Sinner was able to win two more major titles at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, along with the ATP Finals, almost pipping Alcaraz for the No. 1 ranking.

Sinner will almost certainly get back to top spot over the next few months as he has zero points to defend until Rome, but the immediate focus is making it three straight Australian Open titles and joining Djokovic as the only other man in the Open Era to have achieved the feat.

As expected, it's been a seamless passage through to the semi-finals - save for a scare in the third round, where Sinner was struggling considerably in the heat before the roof was closed and he was able to close out Eliot Spizzirri in four sets.

Sinner proceeded to knock out countryman Luciano Darderi in straights before dismantling the big-serving Ben Shelton 6-3 6-4 6-4 in the quarter-finals. The Italian has now won nine consecutive matches in straight sets over Shelton and improved to a perfect 18-0 vs Americans in Grand Slam matches.

Djokovic didn't have to face a top 70 player across his opening three rounds - and then he hasn't won a set over the last six days.

In an incredible sequence of events for the Serbian, his fourth round opponent Jakub Mensik withdrew with injury before Lorenzo Musetti was forced to retire when leading by two sets in their quarter-final showdown.

It's a much-needed break for Djokovic if he is to stand any chance of challenging Sinner, but it was also worrying how he was being completely outplayed by Musetti in the quarter-finals. Overall, it's tough to gauge Djokovic's true form as he just hasn't beaten anyone of note so far in the tournament.

Nevertheless, the 38-year-old is now the second-oldest man to have made the singles semi-finals at the Australian Open in the Open Era, younger only than Ken Rosewall in 1976 and 1977.
