A former Australian Open quarter-finalist, Tiafoe endured an extremely disappointing 2025 season, dropping out of the top 30. It prompted a change in coaching setup as Tiafoe ended his year after Shanghai, intent on starting 2026 fresh and determined to get back to his best tennis, which propelled him into the top 10. Tiafoe is looking in solid form to launch the year, but he will have to be on guard against Comesana, who has picked up some big scalps at the slams and is certainly not just your classic Argentine clay courter, equipped with a powerful game that can do damage on all surfaces.

Comesana is flashy and will make plenty of highlight reels - and I think that talent can see him take a set here. However, a focused Tiafoe is a very good player and the American looks like he's re-committed himself to the sport after a tough 2025. It should be a fun match to watch - backing Tiafoe in four or five.

Splitting with David Witt and linking up with Mark Kovacs, Tiafoe is hoping to find the sort of tennis that propelled him into the top 10 a couple of years ago and saw him make major semi-finals.

Tiafoe launched his 2026 season by making the second round of Brisbane, losing to eventual champion Daniil Medvedev, while he was untroubled in a 7-6 6-3 6-2 victory over qualifier Jason Kubler in his Australian Open first round.

Comesana has established himself as a top 100 player over the last couple of years and now the next challenge is to find the consistency to enter the top 50 - because he certainly has the talent and firepower.

The 25-year-old has already proven he has what it takes to beat top players on the big stage, reaching the third round of Wimbledon and the US Open in 2024 in his first slam main draw appearances, beating the likes of Andrey Rublev and Ugo Humbert.

Dangerous on all surfaces, Comesana was a semi-finalist at the 500 event in Rio and made the R16 of the Cincinnati Masters last year.

The Argentine made the second round of Auckland to start 2026 and registered his maiden Australian Open win in his first round, navigating past Patrick Kypson in four sets.
