De Minaur has emerged as a top 10 mainstay over the last couple of years, showcasing remarkable consistency and an ability to beat those ranked below him. The challenge for de Minaur now is finding that extra firepower and decisive weapon that can allow him to hang with the likes of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz - the latter of which he is seeded to face in the quarter-finals if all goes according to plan. However, the Aussie can't afford to look past this second round duel with Medjedovic, who is a very dangerous opponent, equipped with a booming serve and immense firepower from the back of the court.

In saying that, Medjedovic most likely doesn't have the fitness to sustain his optimum level of play throughout the course of best-of-five sets with someone like de Minaur. It wouldn't surprise me if Medjedovic caught fire for say a 20-minute period, but maintaining that level against the game's elite has proven problematic for the Serbian throughout his young career. I can see de Minaur pulling away late into this clash, while he may even register a straight sets victory if he can weather the early storm successfully.

Currently operating at a career-high ranking and coming off a first ATP Finals semi-finals showing at the end of last year, the stage couldn't be more inviting for de Minaur to finally break his Grand Slam quarter-final hurdle at his home slam at the Australian Open.

It was a shaky start to the season for de Minaur after he went down in straight sets at the United Cup to Casper Ruud - but since then, it's been one-way traffic.

The Aussie produced some great performances to defeat in-form players in Jakub Mensik and Hubert Hurkacz for the remainder of the United Cup, while he was at his ruthless best in his Australian Open first round on Monday.

Initially drawn a danger match with Matteo Berrettini, de Minaur instead took on lucky loser Mackenzie McDonald after the Italian withdrew injured. De Minaur was simply a level above his American opponent, easing to a 6-2 6-2 6-3 victory.

It was a decent year for Medjedovic in 2025, but consistency and fitness are still holding him back in terms of rising into the top 50 and really taking his game to the next level.

Medjedovic risks dropping outside the top 100 next month as he is defending runner-up points in Marseille. The Serbian's other main highlights last year were making the third round of Roland Garros and quarter-final runs in Mallorca and Winston Salem.

The 22-year-old started the year in solid fashion, qualifying for Auckland and beating Aleksandar Kovacevic before falling to eventual champion Jakub Mensik in three sets in the second round.

Medjedovic then registered his first Grand Slam main draw win outside of Roland Garros in his opening round in Melbourne, toppling Mariano Navone in four sets.
