Australia’s three-match T20 tour of New Zealand, starting October 1 at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui, shapes as another chapter in a fierce trans-Tasman rivalry, but the Kiwis will head in hampered by injuries and absences.

Michael Bracewell takes the reins as skipper with regular captain Mitch Santner sidelined after abdominal surgery, and the squad is missing plenty of heavy hitters including Finn Allen (foot), Lockie Ferguson (hamstring), Adam Milne (ankle), Will O’Rourke (back) and Glenn Phillips (groin), while Kane Williamson has chosen to sit this one out. That leaves New Zealand banking on depth and youth, with Kyle Jamieson’s return and Ben Sears’ comeback offering some hope, and Ish Sodhi the lone frontline spinner.

Australia meanwhile travel with a steadier outfit, welcoming back Marcus Stoinis to the all-rounder ranks alongside inclusions Matt Short and Mitch Owen, while Pat Cummins rests up with a back niggle and Nathan Ellis takes paternity leave. Josh Inglis’ calf injury has opened the door for Alex Carey to join the squad, keeping the keeping-batting stocks solid.

The series will be a good test of leadership for Bracewell, guiding a patched-up side against an Aussie unit that looks stronger on paper, and the key questions will be whether New Zealand’s batting can find enough punch without Allen and Williamson, and if their seamers can rattle Australia’s deep batting order.

The Aussies will go in as favourites and should come out of the trip to New Zealand holding onto their bragging rights.
