After a false start in Canberra with the opening match abandoned due to rain, India will to extend their T20 dominance with a win over Australia at the MCG.

While boundaries may be harder to come by at the wide expanses of the MCG, India’s batting did look ominous in the with 97 runs coming from the 9.4 overs that were fitted in.

Expect a fiery PowerPlay from both sides and totals pushing beyond 170, which has usually been par at the venue. India’s spin depth and batting momentum give them the edge to draw first blood, though Australia’s top-order firepower ensures a high-octane contest.

Australia, will look to their captain Mitch Marsh to carry over his sparkling form from Australia’s recent series against New Zealand, while Travis Head will bring his usual aggressive intent but will need to find a balance between power and patience.

India’s variety in attack may prove the difference. Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy can strangle the run rate in the middle overs, while Jasprit Bumrah’s precision at the death remains unmatched. Add in Axar Patel’s ability to exploit left-hand matchups, and India hold the tactical edge.

Take India in the head to head and for player props, Travis Head has cleared 25+ in seven of his past 10 T20I innings. Abhishek Sharma missed out in Canberra but has been India’s tone-setter, striking 33.5% of deliveries for boundaries and averaging a six every 8.4 balls in the PowerPlay this year. Take him to clear the fence on at least one occasion.

Head to Head

The Canberra opener was the second no result in 33 outings between the two sides. India hold the advantage at 20 wins to 11. Prior to Game 1, the two sides last met in the Super Eights stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup and it was India that prevailed by 24 runs. India have won the past three series against Australia, including a 4-1 demolition in India in 2023, as well as a 2-1 win the last time the two sides played down-under.

Australia Form & Team News

Since the 2024 World Cup, Australia have a 16-2 win-loss record in T20I, winning five of six series and drawing another. The edged out South Africa 2-1 this year in the top end of Australia before venturing to New Zealand and taking out the three-match series against the Kiwis, 2-0, while one game was lost due to rain.

Australia’s win against the Kiwis was driven by captain Mitch Marsh’s explosive form with the bat, smashing 72 off 44 in the opener to lead a six-wicket chase, then followed up with a match-winning unbeaten 103 (52) in the decider — his first T20I century and eighth international ton overall. Travis Head (31 off 18) and Matt Short (29 off 18 and 1-34) gave Australia fast starts and useful overs, while Tim David (21 no, sharp fielding) and Marcus Stoinis finished games strongly. With the ball, Josh Hazlewood (2-26, 1-23 earlier), Ben Dwarshuis (2-40 in game one), Sean Abbott (3-25 in game three) and Xavier Bartlett (2-25) kept New Zealand in check.

Tim David is averaging 61 with the bat in 2025 at a strike rate of 2025. Ben Dwarhsuis has picked up 15 wickets in eight matches.

India Form & Team News

Suryakumar Yadav’s 39* from 24 balls in Canberra signalled a return to form, while Shubman Gill’s fluent 37* off 20 balls reaffirmed his PowerPlay dominance. The pair’s strike rotation and clean hitting make India’s top order the most dangerous in world T20 cricket right now.

Since going unbeaten in eight matches to claim the 2024 T20I World Cup, India have continued to dominate their rivals, picking up six series since, including the recent Asia Cup. They are unbeaten in their past 12 series and have won 30 of their past 35 matches, while two of those were no-results.

In the Asia Cup, Abhishek Sharma was the standout performer, finishing as the tournament’s top scorer with 314 runs at a strike rate of 200, masking India’s muddled middle order and captain Suryakumar Yadav’s poor form (72 runs in seven innings). Despite batting inconsistencies and constant reshuffling—particularly with Sanju Samson and Shubman Gill—India’s superior depth carried them past inconsistent rivals. On the bowling front, Kuldeep Yadav (17 wickets) continued his dominance, while Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube offered mixed returns as all-round seam options, exposing the absence of a consistent second specialist pacer behind Jasprit Bumrah.

India Squad

Suryakumar Yadav (c), Shubman Gill (vc), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Varun Chakaravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Sanju Samson (wk), Rinku Singh, Washington Sundar
