Reigning French Open champion Gauff wasn't able to win a warm-up match on grass and now faces one of the more threatening unseeded players in the draw on the slick Centre Court lawns - did somebody say upset alert?
While I still think it's unlikely Yastremska pulls off the win, the Ukrainian no doubt has the ability to make this match very competitive and cover a rather big +5.5 line. It wasn't long ago in Madrid where Yastremska won the opening set 6-0 over Gauff, eventually succumbing 7-5 in the third. Yastremska is also a former Australian Open semi-finalist, so she knows how to advance deep at the slams. Both players' best result at Wimbledon is the R16.
Head To Head
Gauff leads 3-0, but as mentioned, their most-recent clash at Madrid was a crazy one, with the American digging deep to register a 0-6 6-2 7-5 victory in the R64.
Coco Gauff Form
Gauff comes into this contest with a 31-9 record on the season, really picking things up from about midway through the clay season - maybe even specifically that comeback win over Yastremska in Madrid.
Struggling after a quarter-final Australian Open exit to Paula Badosa, Gauff found her groove again a couple of month ago, reaching back-to-back finals in Madrid and Rome before breaking through for her second Grand Slam title and first Roland Garros crown.
It was a brilliant performance from Gauff, who subdued World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in a three-set triumph, rising to No. 2 in the world.
Understandably, Gauff took some time off, which meant she hasn't been able to compete much on grass, losing in the opening round of Berlin to Wang Xinyu in her only match.
Dayana Yastremska Form
Yastremska heads into this encounter having registered a 23-14 record on the season and ranked No. 42 in the world.
The Ukrainian is never going to be the most consistent player on tour, but she's made third rounds at big tournaments in Dubai, Indian Wells and Roland Garros to remain in the top 50.
Yastremska has also made two finals in 2025, firstly in Linz before making her first grass court final in Nottingham, where she went down to McCartney Kessler.
Continuing her solid form on grass, Yastremska reached the quarter-finals of Eastbourne last week, meaning she's got plenty of match practice under her belt heading into this clash.

Verdict
It's never easy backing up after winning a Grand Slam title and the Wimbledon first round on Centre Court against a dangerous opponent in Yastremska only makes Gauff's task even more difficult here.
It would be impressive if Gauff produced a routine win here - I'm backing Yastremska to do enough to cover a +5.5 games line.
