Alexei Popyrin faces Alexandre Muller in a vital first-round match at the Australian Open. Both players have experienced recent slumps, with Popyrin on a seven-match losing streak and Muller struggling with only one win in 2026. Despite his ranking drop, Popyrin seeks to leverage the home crowd support to secure a morale-boosting victory. Analyst predictions favor a match extending beyond three sets, given Muller's Grand Slam record of lengthy battles. Fans can catch the action live with streaming options at Unibet.

Alexei Popyrin vs Alexandre Muller Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Alexei Popyrin is desperate to break a run of seven straight defeats when he comes up against Alexandre Muller in the first round of the Australian Open on Monday night.

It's been a nightmare run of form for Popyrin, who comes into this encounter winless since last year's US Open. It appeared as if the Aussie was finally going to take the next step in his career after winning his maiden Masters 1000 title in Canada in 2024, but a combination of niggling injuries, motivation and overall poor form contributed to a slide back down the rankings last year, with Popyrin arriving in Melbourne at No. 50 in the world. Meanwhile, Muller has also suffered a rankings slide, two spots below Popyrin, after failing to defend his Hong Kong title from last year, suffering a second round exit to launch his 2026 a couple of weeks ago.

Both of these players are down on confidence and will be determined for a morale-boosting slam victory here. I can't see either player winning this in straights, which makes Over 3.5 total sets an attractive option for the main play. Muller consistently goes to four or five sets at the slams, but his record isn't great. I really don't have much faith in Popyrin, but with the home crowd behind him, perhaps he can knuckle down and grind this one out.
  • Muller has seen Over 3.5 sets in six of his last seven Grand Slam matches
  • Muller has a 5-14 record at Grand Slam level
  • Muller has a 1-3 record at the Australian Open
  • Muller went 10-18 vs top 50 players in 2025

Popyrin vs Muller Head To Head

Popyrin leads 1-0, but the pair have never played a tour-level match before.

Alexei Popyrin Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 0-2
  • 2025 Record: 17-22
  • Australian Open Record: 8-8
  • Grand Slam Record: 24-27
  • Current Ranking: No. 50
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 19 (August 2025)

Popyrin has always had the talent and potential, but consistency remains a huge issue and the primary reason he hasn't been able to build on his brief run into the top 20.

The sky was the limit for Popyrin after he won the Canada Masters in 2024 and proceeded to upset Novak Djokovic at the US Open.

However, the Aussie compiled a negative record on tour last year and struggled to produce his best tennis on a weekly basis.

Popyrin ended the year on a five-match losing streak and that's increased to seven to start 2026, with the 26-year-old losing in the opening rounds of Brisbane and Adelaide to Quentin Halys and Reilly Opelka respectively.

Alexandre Muller Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 1-2
  • 2025 Record: 19-27
  • Australian Open Record: 1-3
  • Grand Slam Record: 5-14
  • Current Ranking: No. 52
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 38 (August 2025)

It was a fantastic start to 2025 for Muller, who picked up his maiden ATP title in Hong Kong and advanced to the final of the 500 tournament in Rio.

However, things quickly went south and after a quarter-final run in Hamburg in May, Muller only won back-to-back tour-level matches once more for the season - and that was the final tournament of the year in Athens, where he reached the last eight.

Muller was then tasked with the pressure of defending his Hong Kong title to kick off 2026 and he didn't handle it well, suffering a second round exit to Marcos Giron.

The Frenchman was also eliminated by Giron in the first round of Auckland last week, so he arrives in Melbourne - where he's only ever won one main draw match - down on confidence and form.
