Alex de Minaur vs Frances Tiafoe Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

It's shaping as a blockbuster showdown under the lights inside Rod Laver Arena as home hope Alex de Minaur comes up against a resurgent Frances Tiafoe for a place in the fourth round of the Australian Open on Friday night.

De Minaur is looking to make the second week of the Australian Open for the fifth straight year as he continues his pursuit of a maiden Grand Slam semi-final, while Tiafoe - who has made two semi-finals at his home slam in the US Open - is hoping to build on a promising start to the year and test himself against one of the world's best players after a disappointing 2025. De Minaur has an absolutely stellar record against players ranked below him at Melbourne Park, but Tiafoe has repeatedly proven he can hang with top 10 players on the biggest stages - but he does have trouble closing them out.

De Minaur leads the H2H and he's just such a tough out here in Melbourne. I believe Tiafoe will catch fire for periods of this match - much like Hamad Medjedovic did in Demon's previous round - and has the ability to snatch a set, perhaps even too, because unlike the Serbian, the American's fitness is far superior. With this in mind, Over 35.5 total games is an attractive option. Ultimately, de Minaur should be able to outlast Tiafoe, but not before a big battle, so will also have a smaller stake on the Aussie to edge this in a five-set Friday night classic.
  • De Minaur has won all 19 of his Australian Open matches vs lower-ranked opponents
  • De Minaur has made at least the R16 at the Australian Open in his last four appearances
  • De Minaur has won three of the four previous meetings between the pair
  • De Minaur had a tour-leading 43 match wins on hardcourt last year
  • Tiafoe is 13-40 vs top 10 players and hasn't beaten one since 2024
  • Tiafoe has seen Over 35.5 games in his last six Grand Slam matches vs top 10 players
  • The only previous meeting between the pair at Grand Slam level produced Over 35.5 games
  • Eight of Tiafoe's last 11 Australian Open matches have seen Over 35.5 games

De Minaur vs Tiafoe Head To Head

De Minaur leads 3-1 at all levels, prevailing 6-4 in the deciding set in their most-recent encounter last year at the Canada Masters.

Alex de Minaur Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 4-1
  • 2025 Record: 55-24
  • Australian Open Record: 19-8
  • Grand Slam Record: 63-32
  • Current Ranking: No. 6
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 6

Operating at a career-high ranking and fresh from a maiden semi-final appearance at the ATP Finals late last year, De Minaur appears ideally placed to finally push beyond the Grand Slam quarter-final barrier at his home major, the Australian Open.

The season began unevenly, with a straight-sets loss to Casper Ruud at the United Cup, but momentum has shifted decisively since then.

De Minaur responded with a series of authoritative performances, overcoming in-form opponents Jakub Mensik and Hubert Hurkacz to close out his United Cup campaign, before delivering a commanding display in the opening round at Melbourne Park.

Originally slated for a potentially tricky first-round clash with Matteo Berrettini, de Minaur instead faced lucky loser Mackenzie McDonald following the Italian’s withdrawal through injury. The Australian was clearly a class above, cruising to a comprehensive 6-2 6-2 6-3 victory.

De Minaur was made to work harder in his second round clash against the dangerous Hamad Medjedovic, but after weathering an early storm, the Aussie's fitness and consistency proved too much for the erratic Serbian to handle, with the sixth seed coming away with a 6-7 6-2 6-2 6-1 triumph.

Frances Tiafoe Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 3-1
  • 2025 Record: 25-22
  • Australian Open Record: 13-9
  • Grand Slam Record: 58-38
  • Current Ranking: No. 34
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 10 (2023)

The 2025 campaign proved a frustrating one for Tiafoe as the American slipped out of the top 30 and openly struggled to recapture his enthusiasm for the tour.

Tiafoe brought his season to an early close after Shanghai, suffering defeats in his final five matches of the year. His standout moments were limited, highlighted by an unexpected quarter-final run at the French Open and a runner-up finish on the clay courts of Houston.

A coaching change has since marked a reset. Parting ways with David Witt and teaming up with Mark Kovacs, Tiafoe is aiming to rediscover the level that carried him into the top 10 and propelled him to Grand Slam semi-final appearances earlier in his career.

His 2026 season began with a second-round showing in Brisbane, where he fell to eventual champion Daniil Medvedev, before opening his Australian Open campaign in assured fashion. Tiafoe was rarely threatened as he dismissed qualifier Jason Kubler 7-6 6-3 6-2 in the first round before holding off the lively Francisco Comesana in the second round, bouncing back from dropping the third set to come away with a 6-4 6-3 4-6 6-2 victory.

Verdict

Tiafoe has pushed top 10 players in the past at Grand Slam level and I think the games line of 35.5 is too low. Demon however has never lost to a player ranked below him in Melbourne and is tipped to edge it in five.
