First run in 1968 and now firmly established as one of the major weight-for-age sprints of the Melbourne spring, the Manikato Stakes has been won by some of Australia’s best short-course performers across several generations.

2026 Manikato Stakes Best Bet - Extragalactic
The booking of James McDonald for Extragalactic is significant, and it would be no surprise to see the Trent Edmonds-trained mare attract support closer to jump time, with a decent each-way price available in early markets.
She was a run behind heading into the Moir Stakes after being scratched a fortnight earlier because of the wet ground, yet still contested that Group 1 first-up on a Soft 7 surface and produced a very good effort to finish fourth of 13.
While she was a dominant fresh winner over 1000m during the autumn, this level looks better suited to 1200m, and we saw her handle the rise from 1000m to this track and trip when completing a winning double at Caulfield on April 4.
That campaign ended with a narrow defeat in The Goodwood at just her seventh career start, underlining the upside she still possesses heading into only her third preparation.
She is not hopeless on wet ground, but a firmer track on Sunday should help bring her turn of foot into play late, while barrier two gives McDonald the chance to use her tactical speed and keep Beiwacht within striking distance, making Extragalactic an appealing each-way play at the early quote.

Did the bubble burst when Oliveanotherday was beaten as an odds-on favourite in the Group 2 Bobbie Lewis Stakes second-up, or was it simply a case of a lightly raced sprinter having his first look down the Flemington straight?
The son of Nicconi deserves another chance given the rapid progression he had made beforehand, winning four straight during his second preparation after showing plenty of raw ability across three starts in his initial campaign.
His spring began with an impressive victory in The Heath over 1100m at Caulfield, and the Tom Dabernig-trained gelding now returns to a track where he remains unbeaten, including a Soft 7 victory back in April.
Coming back around a bend should also suit, and while this was always going to represent another rise in grade, a win in the Bobbie Lewis would likely have seen him much shorter in betting for the Manikato Stakes.
His Flemington defeat was hardly a complete failure, so at the bigger price now available, there is no reason to abandon him if you liked the profile beforehand, especially back at Caulfield under conditions that have suited him well.
