World No. 1 Jannik Sinner continues his impressive US Open title defence with a quarter-final match against fellow Italian Lorenzo Musetti. Sinner enters the contest in record-breaking form, having crushed Alexander Bublik and registering dominant set wins throughout the season. Musetti, who has returned to form despite a challenging post-injury summer, faces a formidable challenge as he is yet to defeat a top 5 player in a Major. Sinner has won both of their previous meetings in straight sets and is widely expected to progress further with another commanding performance.

Sinner's dominance is soaring to incomprehensible heights - the Italian absolutely obliterated Alexander Bublik 6-1 6-1 6-1 in just one our and 21 minutes in the R16, which was the quickest second-week US Open match since 2019. Sinner has now registered set wins by 6-0 or 6-1 scores 25 times in just 39 matches this year, which is a ridiculous stat. He's also become the youngest ever player to reach at least the quarter-finals at all four majors in consecutive seasons, eclipsing the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

Next up for Sinner is a fellow Italian in Musetti, who has enjoyed a stunning resurgence in New York after winning just one of his four matches during the summer. Musetti has only dropped one set on his way to the quarter-finals and he has a 2-0 record at this stage of a slam. However, Musetti has lost all six previous meetings with top five opponents at major tournaments. With Sinner operating at the peak of his powers, this is likely to be another straight sets demolition for the World No. 1.

Head To Head

Sinner leads 2-0, winning both previous meetings in straight sets at 2021 Antwerp (7-5 6-2) and 2023 Monte Carlo (6-2 6-2).

Jannik Sinner Form

Sinner has recorded a 35-4 record on the season and remains the World No. 1 - although Carlos Alcaraz would eclipse him for the top spot if the Spaniard goes one round further than him in New York.

That is mostly due to Sinner missing three months of this season due to his suspension from the Australian Open to Rome.

After defending his Australian Open title in January, Sinner returned to action for the end of the clay swing, where he lost finals to Alcaraz in Rome and Roland Garros.

Sinner turned the tables with a big win over Alcaraz for his maiden Wimbledon title, but he was forced to retire with illness in the Cincinnati final ahead of the US Open.

The World No. 1 had to battle through a tough four-setter against Denis Shapovalov in the third round, but returned to his dominant best in the R16, blitzing Alexander Bublik - who was on an 11-match winning streak - 6-1 6-1 6-1.

Lorenzo Musetti Form

Musetti has registered a 30-12 record this season, rising into the world's top 10 and establishing himself as one of the best players on tour.

It was during the clay swing where Musetti did his best work, reaching the final of Monte Carlo before semi-final finishes in Madrid, Rome and Roland Garros.

Unfortunately, Musetti suffered a leg injury in the French Open semi-finals and that seemingly derailed his momentum, with the Italian losing four of his next five matches before arriving in New York.

However, after a tough opening round draw against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, Musetti has cruised into his first US Open quarter-final, beating David Goffin and Jaume Munar in straight sets and benefitting from a retirement against Flavio Cobolli.

Verdict

Sinner is in intimidating form and hasn't lost to a fellow Italian since 2020.

He's coming off a 6-1 6-1 6-1 rout of Bublik and looks in the mood to deliver another straight sets beatdown here.
