Launceston Roughie - Race 2 No. 12 Precious Illusion

Two runs into her preparation, Precious Illusion has already produced a solid first-up effort on a wet surface at Hobart over 1100m.

The filly finished seventh-of-13 and, while unable to trouble the principals, was beaten just over three lengths in her first appearance since finishing seventh in Listed company at the same track in January.

She failed to shine when sixth at Devonport Synthetic subsequently, but can be forgiven that performance given it was her first start away from turf.

Stuart Gandy’s representative is expected to appreciate the return to a forecast wet track, while barrier seven should not pose any major issues.

The daughter of Needs Further tackles this distance for the first time and, although a step forward is required, she may show enough improvement to record her maiden victory.

Launceston Best Bet - Race 4 No. 3 Who’s In Dev

An excellent record at this venue makes Who’s In Dev a leading chance on her return, having recorded two wins and three runner-up finishes from five starts earlier this year.

All five of those appearances came at Launceston, including when losing out by less than half-a-length over 1400m in April in a Class 2 handicap on a Soft 5 surface.

The mare had previously taken out a Class 1 event over the same distance here and again delivered a big effort when racing prominently in attempting to complete the double.

Underfoot conditions and the race distance are both positives here, while an inside barrier also works in her favour given she has raced prominently in recent starts.

Glenn Stevenson’s representative has trialled impressively ahead of her return and, with promising apprentice Kirra-Lee Lane aboard for her last two hit-outs, she looks capable of resuming with a victory.

Launceston Value Bet - Race 7 No. 6 Prince Of Khatun

A productive preparation last time in included a Class 6 victory at Hobart in February for Prince Of Khatun.

Racing on a wet track over 1000m, the gelding proved too strong by half-a-length on that occasion.

Any drying of the surface would be no issue either, with the pick ending that campaign with a good third over 1200m on Good ground at this venue in February.

That form has worked out well, with the winner subsequently scoring at Caulfield and the runner-up saluting when returning to Launceston next time.

The son of Stratosphere has won first-up in the past, has trialled well recently and, with the distance in his favour, a wide barrier should be manageable for a runner representing the powerful Erica Byrne-Burke and Adam Trinder combination.

Launceston Next Best Bet - Race 8 No. 2 Benefitsofmine

Benefitsofmine has won two of his past three starts, including a Benchmark 64 success at this venue last time.

Racing on a Good surface, the gelding overcame a wide barrier to score comfortably by nearly two lengths over 1200m on his first appearance at Launceston.

The son of Shamoline Warrior had previously performed well when runner-up in a Class 2 event at Hobart, beaten one-and-a-half lengths from a wide gate in a race where three of the first four home raced prominently.

Southern Auroras, who won that contest, is set to reoppose here, although Kelvin Hamilton’s representative looks capable of reversing that form from a more favourable barrier draw.

Kelvin Sanderson has already triumphed twice aboard the gelding, including last time out, and the pair are taken to record their third win together.
