Chris Waller and James McDonald have combined to win the last two editions of the Thousand Guineas and they're in the box-seat to complete a hat-trick with Aeliana (barrier 11), who impressed on Victoria Derby Day when bolting in with the Carbine Club Stakes by 3.5-lengths.

The Carbine Club Stakes has been a good building block for Chris Waller-trained three-year-old's, with Kermadec, Comin' Through and Fangirl his prior winners of that Derby Day opener, and all three of those gallopers were subsequent Group 1 winners.

Zeitung (barrier 4) also saluted on Victoria Derby Day, with the Godolphin filly taking out the The TAB Vanity over 1400m and that followed a runner-up finish via the Thousand Guineas Prelude on October 19.

Lovelycut (barrier 8) also comes out of the TAB Vanity, where the Reece Goodwin-trained filly managed a fourth-of-eleven finish and being only third-up for the Thousand Guineas, she could have more upside than many rivals who have been up for longer.

Benagil (barrier 10) opened her account with back-to-back wins last season and this three-year-old is building towards a peak performance over 1600m following three spring outings via the main Melbourne lead-up's.

We've seen the famous black and yellow diamonds of Arrowfield salute in the Thousand Guineas via past winners Miss Finland, Stay With Me and Yearning, and they'll be represented by Dominetta (barrier 9) in the 2024 edition.

A half-sister to Hartnell (four-time Group 1 winner), Dominetta broke through first-up on September 25 and she placed in the TAB Vanity following a narrow second-up defeat behind Aeliana at Randwick.

13 runners make up the final field for the 2024 Thousand Guineas.

Thousand Guineas Winners

A relatively new race to the Australian racing calendar in comparison to other carnival features, the Thousand Guineas was first run and won in 1946 when Sweet Chime took it out.

Gaining Group 1 status in 1979, the Thousand Guineas was run on the second day of the Melbourne Spring Carnival (Wednesday) from 1988 to 2013 and then after returning to that slot following some time on the Caulfield Guineas program, it's now run following the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

The Thousand Guineas joins the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, another rescheduled Group 1 and these features headline a new meeting on the calendar.

Classy fillies have won this 1600m affair, with Miss Finland, Atlantic Jewel and Alinghi three of the more notable champions who feature on the honour roll.

Yearning (2021), Madame Pommery (2022) and Joliestar (2023) have won the last three editions of the Thousand Guineas.
