Light Infantry Man (barrier 2) headed the early betting via an open market for the 2024 Railway Stakes, with the Ciaron Maher-trained galloper favoured despite interstate raiders having a modest recent record in this feature.
The six-year-old import broke a winning drought of more than three years last start when recording a 2.25-length triumph in the Chester Manifold Stakes at Flemington and he did place five times at Group 1 level when campaigning in Europe.
James McDonald stays aboard Light Infantry Man for this Group 1 assignment in the west.
Super Smink (barrier 18) is one of the leading local hopes in the futures market and this mare won a key lead-up race on November 2 when successful in the Group 3 Asian Beau Stakes.
The Daniel Morton-trained galloper profiles well for the Railway Stakes, where she has 53kg (eight of the last nine winners have carried this impost) and four-year-old's have saluted in four of the last five editions.
Another local four-year-old who sets up well is Zipaway (barrier 12), with this gelding arriving second-up after a good return in the Lee-Steer Stakes.
Prepared by Neville Parnham, who is aiming for back-to-back Railway Stakes wins, Zipaway won the WA Guineas on this program 12 months ago before placing in the Group 1 Northerly Stakes, while he was also competitive in two of three Melbourne starts earlier this year.
Neville Parnham has also accepted with last year's Railway Stakes winner Bustler (barrier 10) and the five-year-old is aiming to become just the third horse in history to win this race twice (last was Luckygray in 2011 and 2013).
Belclare (barrier 14) has won her last two appearances in Sydney and Magic Time has been runner-up on both occasions, a mare who saluted twice at Group 1 level last season.
Nash Rawiller rides the topweight and the veteran hoop is searching for his second Railway Stakes win, with Rawiller having saluted on Sniper's Bullet in the 2009 Railway Stakes.
William Pike has ridden five Railway Stakes winners and all of those victories have come for the Grant & Alana Williams stable.
The popular combination team up with Casino Seventeen (barrier 11) who arrives off an upset win when first-up in the Lee Steere Stakes and that 1400m Group 2 is one of the traditional lead-up races to the Railway Stakes.
Democracy Manifest (barrier 19), Socks Nation (barrier 17) and Port Lockroy (barrier 9) are among the interstate raiders for this Group 1 handicap, with Mark Zahra (Democracy Manifest) and Declan Bates (Socks Nation) travelling over for these key engagements.
16 runners (plus four emergencies) make up the final field for the 2024 Railway Stakes.

Railway Stakes Winners
Arguably Western Australia's most prestigious race, the Railway Stakes has over 100 years of history in the west of the country.
The Railway Stakes is the first Group One of the Perth Summer Carnival, a feature which is followed by the Winterbottom and Northerly Stakes.
Ran over the mile, the Railway is worth $1.5 million and is often a launching pad for horses looking to forge a career in the east of the country, as we've seen in recent years with Scales Of Justice, Regal Power and Inspirational Girl
Western Empire (2021), Trix Of The Trade (2022) and Bustler (2023) have won the last three editions of the Railway Stakes.
