The most open of Saturday’s Group 1's is the Champions Mile, and a very competitive early market supports that.
Leaning to Treasurethe Moment, who could be suited back in distance in a fast-run mile after a brave third in the Cox Plate.
That wasn’t a return to winning form, but after getting softened up when Nepotism applied pressure mid-race, it left her vulnerable late and it took two seasoned 2000m gallopers in Via Sistina and Buckaroo to have the last say.
She still held a safe margin on the rest of the field and a return to Flemington, where she’s unbeaten from three starts, won’t hurt.
Treasurethe Moment is already proven away from fillies’ company with a brilliant Memsie Stakes win on return, where she took care of a hot field at Caulfield.
2025 Champions Mile Next Best Bet - Ceolwulf
He comes through the King Charles III Stakes, where he defeated both Mr Brightside and Pride Of Jenni, and will make his Melbourne debut after racing exclusively in Sydney to this point.
Ceolwulf appeared to be labouring slightly before that latest win, but Joe Pride’s decision to apply blinkers provided the necessary spark and reignited his form.
When in peak rhythm, he took out last year’s King Charles III Stakes off his Epsom success, and he now brings the same confidence-boosting platform into this.
Untried racing anti-clockwise under pressure, which is a slight query, but the spacious Flemington circuit and a fast tempo should play to his strengths.
Class and timing are firmly in his favour, and Ceolwulf looms a genuine contender in the Champions Mile.
