Alexei Popyrin, once a Canada Masters champion, returns to Montreal amid a significant slump, having dropped out of the top 100 with a string of poor results since 2024. His confidence is low, and his recent split from coach Xavier Malisse has only worsened his form. Meanwhile, Argentine Roman Andres Burruchaga arrives on strong clay results and is making his tour-level hardcourt debut. Despite Popyrin's past Montreal success, current form favors Burruchaga, who is tipped to cover +2.5 games and may even win outright. Watch live via Unibet (geo-restrictions and conditions apply).

Roman Andres Burruchaga vs Alexei Popyrin ATP Montreal Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

It's been a nightmare last 12 months for Alexei Popyrin as the former Canada Masters champion returns to Montreal ranked outside the world's top 100 - he's got a great draw in his opening round, but the Aussie can't be trusted as Roman Andres Burruchaga is backed to cover with a +2.5 start in his first tour-level hardcourt outing of the year.

Popyrin has suffered a seismic fall from grace since winning his maiden Masters 1000 title in Montreal two years ago. The 26-year-old returns at No. 139 in the rankings, winning just eight matches for the year and coming off a 6-1 in the third defeat to World No. 262 Andres Andrade in the first round of the Vancouver Challenger in his most-recent tournament.

Truth be told, Popyrin just hasn't been the same since parting ways with coach Xavier Malisse and the results and form just isn't clicking with current coach Neville Godwin.

As mentioned, this is actually a great opening round draw for Popyrin, who only made the main draw after compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis retired during their qualifying encounter.

Burruchaga hasn't played a tour-level match on hardcourt in his entire career, rising to the cusp of the top 50 this year on the back of some good results on clay. The Argentine - son of 1986 World Cup hero Jorge Burruchaga - does have a decent 8-7 hardcourt record at Challenger level, which suggests that on current form, he can certainly match it with this version of Popyrin.

Popyrin is 9-1 at the Canada Masters, but there's just no indication he's about to turn things around other than wishful thinking at a tournament he thrived at in the past. Tennis is a funny sport and things like that sometimes matter, but I'm going to take Burruchaga to cover with a +2.5 start and prevail outright.
  • Popyrin is on a six-match losing streak in completed matches
  • Popyrin is 4-12 vs top 60 players in 2026
  • Burruchaga has won five of his last seven matches
  • Popyrin is 5-12 in first round tour-level matches in 2026
  • Burruchaga has won three of his last four matches vs players outside the top 100

Burruchaga vs Popyrin Head To Head

This will be the first career meeting between the pair.

Roman Andres Burruchaga Form Analysis

  • 2026 ATP Record: 12-11
  • ATP Canada Record: 0-0
  • Current Ranking: No. 56
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 56 (May 2026)

It comes as no surprise that Burruchaga's best results this season have come on clay, propelling him to the cusp of a top 50 debut.

Burruchaga won the Challenger title in Sao Paulo in March before backing it up with a run to his maiden ATP final in Houston, beating Learner Tien and Brandon Nakashima before falling to Tommy Paul.

The Argentine didn't win a match on grass, but returned to clay post-Wimbledon with some good results, making the semi-finals in Umag and quarter-finals in Estoril.

Burruchaga will now play his first ever tour-level match on hardcourt in his Canada Masters debut.

Alexei Popyrin Form Analysis

  • 2026 ATP Record: 8-17
  • ATP Canada Record: 9-1
  • Current Ranking: No. 139
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 19 (August 2025)

What a difference a couple of years makes.

Popyrin came from nowhere to win the Canada Masters in Montreal in 2024 and backed it up with a good run to the quarter-finals in Toronto last year, breaking into the top 20 for the first time.

Seven of Popyrin's nine wins in Canada have come against top 20 players, showcasing his ability to beat the very best.

However, splitting with Malisse was the catalyst for a dire form slump that he's yet to recover from.

Popyrin has managed just four wins over top 60 opponents in 2026, with his best results coming at small clay 250s when he made the quarter-finals in Houston and Geneva.

The Aussie dropped down to Challenger level last week in a bid to restore some confidence, but instead crashed out in the opening round of Vancouver to No. 262 Andres Andrade 7-5 3-6 6-1. Popyrin received some good fortune in Montreal qualifying on the weekend, advancing into the main draw after Thanasi Kokkinakis was forced to retire.
