Tsitsipas showcased some encouraging signs by winning the Gstaad title on clay, but his hardcourt form continues to be underwhelming after losing in the opening round of Washington to an out-of-sorts Alex de Minaur - a player he had previously beat in 12 of their 13 tour-level meetings.

The Greek has linked up with a new coach in Thomas Perrin from the Mouratoglou Academy, but it remains to be seen if he can get back to the top of the game.

This is an interesting opening round matchup. Tsitsipas has lost his five Canada Masters matches, while Damm is on the brink of the top 100 and has nothing to lose here.

Damm is equipped with a massive serve and has the lefty element, which he can use to target the vulnerable Tsitsipas one-handed backhand. The American will want to avoid getting into extended baseline exchanges and instead adopt a first-strike approach with the intention of ending rallies quickly.

Bit of a long shot, but Damm can execute, the upset is there for the taking. Just can't back Tsitsipas as a $1.50 favourite on hardcourt right now. Over 22.5 games with 1+ tiebreak are the other plays.

Tsitispas has rebuilt his ranking towards a top 50 return, but he continues to struggle and operate way below his best tennis, which saw him climb to as high as No. 3 in the world and reach Grand Slam and Masters 1000 finals.

The Greek looks nowhere close to a return to that sort of tennis, but did restore some confidence with a title in Gstaad a few weeks ago. However, that result came on clay when most players were taking a break after Wimbledon, so Tsitsipas still has plenty to prove.

The 27-year-old had a great chance to continue his momentum in Washington last week, but couldn't make it 13 tour-level wins over Alex de Minaur, suffering a three-set defeat in the opening round.

Forced to qualify for the Canada Masters due to his rankings slump ahead of the cut-off, Tsitsipas dispatched local player and World No. 831 Keegan Rice 6-3 6-4 to make the main draw.

The Greek made the final of the Canada Masters in 2018 and the semi-finals in 2021, but sensationally hasn't won a match since, losing his last five - including a three-set defeat to Christopher O'Connell in 2025.

Damm stands on the brink of a top 100 debut and you'd think he'd achieve that career milestone at some stage over the summer - perhaps even with an upset win here.

The 22-year-old holds a solid 5-5 record in the first round of tour-level matches this season, with his best result coming at the start of the year indoors when he reached the semi-finals of Montpellier.

The American managed to win a round at Wimbledon and also qualified for the Washington main draw, where he stretched Ben Shelton to three sets in the opening round.

Damm will feature in his fourth Masters 1000 main draw of the year after beating Henrique Rocha 6-3 7-6(3) in qualifying.
