Alex de Minaur faces James Duckworth in an all-Aussie clash at the ATP Montreal Masters. While de Minaur remains the favorite due to his top-10 ranking and recent semifinal runs, his patchy form and Duckworth’s resilience suggest a closer contest than rankings suggest. Duckworth has consistently kept matches tight against de Minaur, including their recent Wimbledon showdown that went to tiebreaks. Expect de Minaur to edge out a win, but Duckworth’s improving form and reliable first serve mean this could be a tough battle.

Alex de Minaur vs James Duckworth ATP Montreal Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Alex de Minaur has been below his best for most of the season and while he's highly likely to win this all-Aussie Canada Masters second showdown, James Duckworth has proven in previous meetings that he can remain competitive in this matchup.

De Minaur remains inside the top 10, but it hasn't been a great year for the Aussie No. 1 and he arrives in Montreal on the back of another disappointing tournament exit, going out in the quarter-finals to Brandon Nakashima in Washington last week - the second time in the space of two months he's lost in the last eight to the American after also going down on the grass of Queen's Club before Wimbledon.

One of de Minaur's best tournaments was at the Canada Masters in 2023, when he made the final before going down to Jannik Sinner. Seeded third this week due to the absence of Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic, de Minaur would expect to feature at the business end of the tournament once again - but I think he needs to raise his level considerably to stand a chance.

De Minaur will almost certainly prove too strong for Duckworth, but his lower-ranked compatriot is in solid form at the moment and has nothing to lose here.

Duckworth has quietly rebuilt his ranking into the top 100 after dropping to No. 139 at the end of last year and he's already got a taste of all-Aussie contests in Montreal after cruising past Chris O'Connell in straight sets in his opening round.

Importantly, Duckworth hasn't been blown away at all by de Minaur in their two previous meetings, with their most-recent clash seeing three tiebreaks. With de Minaur down on form and confidence, Duckworth and his underrated first serve can make this match relatively competitive.
  • Duckworth has covered a +5.5 line in his two previous meetings with de Minaur
  • Duckworth has covered a +5.5 line in 23 of his last 24 matches at all levels
  • Duckworth has covered a +5.5 line in seven of his last nine matches vs top 10 players
  • Duckworth has a 0-18 record in his career vs top 10 players
  • De Minaur has failed to cover a -5.5 line in four of his last five best-of-three matches
  • De Minaur is 11-4 in opening matches in 2026
  • De Minaur is 11-3 vs players outside the top 80 in 2026, winning the last five

Alex de Minaur Form Analysis

  • ATP 2026 Record: 29-15
  • ATP Canada Record: 9-5
  • Current Ranking: No. 7
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 5 (July 2026)

Relatively speaking, it's been a poor season for De Minaur - at least after the first six weeks of the year, that saw him make the Australian Open quarter-finals and win the ATP 500 title in Rotterdam.

After Rotterdam, de Minaur went 5-6 from Acapulco to Rome, picking up some form again by making the semi-finals of Hamburg - but he couldn't build on that performance, winning just one match at Roland Garros before going down to Jakub Mensik.

De Minaur suffered more disappointment, losing the Hertogenbosch final to Kamil Majchrzak and the Queen's quarter-finals to Nakashima before wasting another chance to go deep at a slam, falling in straight sets to Flavio Cobolli in the fourth round of Wimbledon.

The 27-year-old didn't play well in Washington last week either, where his title defence came to an end in the quarter-finals with another defeat to Nakashima. De Minaur has played well in Canada in his last two appearances, making the final in 2023 and the quarter-finals in 2025.

James Duckworth Form Analysis

  • ATP 2026 Record: 6-13
  • ATP Canada Record: 5-3
  • Current Ranking: No. 86
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 46 (2026)

Duckworth has been a solid player for almost two decades now, repeatedly coming back from serious injury setbacks to remain a top 100 feature for the bulk of his career.

Somewhat surprisingly, Duckworth has always performed strongly at the Canada Masters - he holds a positive 5-3 record, with all three defeats coming against top 10 players.

The 34-year-old hasn't had much joy at tour-level this season, but he has won a match at all three majors, which helps the bank account. Duckworth also managed to make the second round in Los Cabos last week before going down 6-4 6-4 to Cameron Norrie.

Duckworth came through his one qualifying match in Montreal to return to the main draw, easing past fellow Australian Chris O'Connell for the loss of just four games, 6-3 6-1.
