Newcastle Jets kick off their Australia Cup title defense with a challenging away tie against NPL Victoria's Preston Lions. Preston, in strong form and making their Round of 32 debut, will look to trouble the Jets, especially with striker Nahuel Bonada in attack. The Jets, despite defensive issues and offseason player turnover, are predicted to advance but could concede against a confident Preston team. The match will be available for live streaming via bet365 for eligible viewers.

Preston Lions vs Newcastle Jets Australia Cup Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Newcastle Jets get their Australia Cup trophy defence up and running with a tricky away fixture against NPL Victoria side Preston Lions on Tuesday night at Genis Steel Stadium in Melbourne.

The Jets set the tone for their brilliant A-League campaign last term by winning their first piece of silverware since the 2008-09 season in the Australia Cup, defeating another NPL Victoria side Heidelberg United 3-1 after extra-time in the final. Mark Milligan's team of young guns produced some brilliant attacking football throughout last season and were only stopped in the A-League semi-finals on penalties by Sydney FC.

Meanwhile, Preston are featuring in the Australia Cup Round of 32 for the first time in their history and will be looking to make an immediate impact.

I think Preston pose a real threat here. The Lions are currently in fourth spot on the NPL Victoria ladder, with Argentine striker Nahuel Bonada the main man with six goals for the season, while former Jets goalkeeper Ryan Scott should line up between the sticks.

For all of their attacking spark last season, the Jets were vulnerable at the back and I'm backing Preston to get on the scoresheet at home. These first competitive games of the new season are always challenging for A-League clubs, who have experienced lots of player turnover, while the NPL sides are right in the thick of their domestic seasons.

I think the Jets will get the job done in the end, but it won't be easy.
  • Preston have won five of their last six games
  • Jets have only won one of their last six competitive games
  • Jets have conceded 1+ goal in eight of their last nine games
  • Jets conceded 39 goals during the regular A-League season - the most of any top six side despite finishing first
  • Jets have seen BTTS land in 13 of their last 16 games
  • Presto have seen BTTS land in two of their last three games

Preston Lions vs Newcastle Jets Head To Head

This will be the first ever meeting between the clubs.

Preston Lions Form Analysis

Preston are enjoying a solid season in NPL Victoria, currently sitting in fourth spot on the ladder and coming into this clash having won five of their last six games

Zoran Markovski's side beat St Albans, Heidelberg, George Cross, Avondale and Hume City before playing out a 0-0 stalemate with South Melbourne this past weekend.

Competing in the Australia Cup Round of 32 for the very first time, Preston thumped George Cross 6-0 in the final round of qualifying to make it to this stage.

Preston Lions Team News

Preston's main threat in attack is Argentine forward Nahuel Bonada, while Ryan Scott lines up against his former club in goals.

Former Mariners and Victory defender Stefan Nigro is also on the Preston books.

Newcastle Jets Form Analysis

It was a magnificent season for the Jets, with the club winning the Australia Cup before going on to finish top during the A-League regular campaign.

That result secured Newcastle a spot in the lucrative Asian Champions League Elite competition for next season, but the Jets couldn't complete a domestic treble, going down on penalties to Sydney FC in the semi-finals.

The Jets played an exciting brand of up-tempo attacking football during Milligan's debut season in charge, scoring 55 goals in 26 games during the regular term.

Newcastle Jets Team News

As expected, the Jets were raided hard in the transfer window, losing a bunch of star players - including Eli Adams and Clayton Taylor.

Joe Lolley has been picked up and will prove a big signing if the former Nottingham Forest winger can stay fit, while Alex Grant has also been recently announced - but it remains to be seen if either line up for this clash.

Patrick Wood and Nikos Vergos have also arrived in the Hunter during the offseason, with the forward duo likely to feature at some stage here.

Preston can make this competitive and find the back of the net, but the Jets are tipped to advance.
