Sydney FC face minor premiers Newcastle Jets on Saturday night in the first leg of their A-League semi-final. Newcastle, having already claimed the Australia Cup and minor premiership, aim for a historic treble. Sydney, despite a poor season, are peaking after beating Melbourne Victory, boasting a solid defense under Patrick Kisnorbo. Stats favour a low-scoring game (under 3.5 goals in recent matches for both teams), with a draw tipped as likely value. Both teams have strong recent form, and the tie sets up for a tight first leg.

Sydney FC vs Newcastle Jets Tips & Prediction

Minor premiers Newcastle Jets return to action as they go on the road to face Sydney FC in the first leg of their semi-final showdown at Allianz Stadium on Saturday night.

The Jets are aiming to become the first team in Australian history to win the treble of the minor premiership, Australia Cup and A-League Grand Final, with Mark Milligan's side already securing the first two following a magical season. Newcastle have produced scintillating football with their youthful squad and should be confident of avoiding defeat in this opening leg after winning their last two meetings with Sydney - including a 2-1 triumph towards the end of the regular campaign at this venue.

Meanwhile, Sydney have been sub-par for basically the entire season, but they could just be peaking at the right time after knockout out rivals Melbourne Victory in a Big Blue elimination final last week.

Tough game to call, but despite Newcastle's scoring prowess, I'm liking Under 3.5 goals for this one. Finals games are different and both elimination matches last weekend went under. Sydney are pretty solid defensively, with goalkeeper Harrison Devenish-Meares keeping 12 clean sheets for the season. I think a draw represents decent value in the H2H market, with both teams sharing the spoils in two of their last three outings.
  • Under 3.5 goals has landed in 11 of Sydney's last 13 games
  • Under 3.5 goals has landed in six of Newcastle's last nine games
  • Under 3.5 goals has landed in the last two meetings this season
  • Sydney have only leaked two goals since Kisnorbo took charge
  • Sydney have drawn two of their last three games
  • Newcastle have drawn two of their last three games
  • Eli Adams has eight goals for the season, including three in his last two appearances

Sydney FC vs Newcastle Jets Head To Head

Sydney ran away dominant 4-0 winners in Round 3 courtesy of an Al Hassan Toure hat-trick before the Jets turned the tables with 2-0 and 2-1 victories in Rounds 9 and 22.

Sydney FC Form Analysis

It hasn't been pretty from Sydney this season, with the club sacking coach Ufuk Talay towards the end of the regular campaign.

A run of just one win from seven games forced Sydney into a sudden-death clash with Melbourne Victory last weekend - but they were able to rise to the occasion.

Devenish-Meares made a series of big saves before Patrick Wood scored the decisive goal with 10 minutes remaining.

“Clean sheet, hard to break down and a mistake is always going to change a game. Unfortunately for the other team and fortunately for us, (it was) one chance, one goal," manager Patrick Kisnorbo said after the 1-0 win at AAMI Park.

Newcastle Jets Form Analysis

It's been an incredible season for the Jets, who have already picked up the Australia Cup and minor premiership, finishing top of the pile with 15 wins from 26 games, five points clear of Adelaide.

A thumping 4-0 win at home against rivals Central Coast was the perfect end to the regular campaign, with Will Dobson, Clayton Taylor, Eli Adams and Kota Mizunuma all getting on the scoresheet.

Newcastle scored 55 goals for the season, nine more than the next-best side - but Sydney have only conceded two goals under the leadership of Kisnorbo.

“Yeah, I suppose that’s something we’ll just have to come up against,” Jets defender Joe Shaughnessy said when quizzed about Sydney's rock solid defence.“
So it’s just another challenge to try and break them down and crack them open. And, you know, we’ve got whatever, 180 minutes to do that now. So it’s yeah, something to look forward to.”
