Newcastle Jets host Sydney FC in the A-League semi-final, with the tie poised at 1-1 after the first leg. The Jets, strong at home and standout team all season, are tipped to edge out Sydney and reach the Grand Final. Under 3.5 goals has hit in most recent encounters, and Clayton Taylor is tipped to be influential after a string of top performances. Sydney FC have improved under Kisnorbo but lack consistency. Expect a tense, low-scoring match, with the Jets favored to progress.

Newcastle Jets vs Sydney FC Tips & Prediction

Newcastle Jets return home to the Hunter as they target a spot in the A-League Grand Final against Sydney FC on Saturday night, with the semi-final tie in the balance at 1-1.

It was a thrilling first leg at Allianz Stadium last week, with Sydney taking the lead early in the second-half through striker Apostolos Stamatelopoulos before Jets winger Eli Adams finished off a brilliant counter-attack for his fourth goal in three games.

“We'll take it [the draw],” Milligan said post-match.
“You’d love to control every game with the ball more, a little bit sloppy, but that’s more down to the week off to be honest. We had to adjust a few things at half time in terms of press. The tie was never going to be decided tonight."

But, the tie will be decided at McDonald Jones Stadium this Saturday night. And I think the Jets can send the home crowd into euphoric celebrations.

Newcastle have been the clear standout team all season, finishing five points clear at the top of the table, scoring 55 goals and playing the best football. Sydney meanwhile have been stop-start all year and struggled with consistent, high-quality performances. Yes, they're unbeaten in six games under Patrick Kisnorbo, but I still don't see a level that can match Newcastle if the Jets hit peak form.

McDonald Jones will be close to a sell-out and the Jets have won five of their last seven at home. Like the first leg, I'm backing Under 3.5 goals, which has gone down in value but still decent. I'll also back the Jets to qualify as I'm not ruling out extra-time. Clayton Taylor has nine goal involvements in his last 12 games and provided the assist for last week's equaliser - he can get on the scoresheet himself in this clash.
  • Under 3.5 goals has landed in 12 of Sydney's last 14 games
  • Under 3.5 goals has landed in seven of Newcastle's last 10 games
  • Under 3.5 goals has landed in the last three meetings this season
  • Newcastle have won five of their last seven home games
  • Sydney have won just two of their last nine games
  • Clayton Taylor has nine goal involvements in his last 12 games (seven goals, two assists)
  • Newcastle have scored exactly two goals in four of their last six games vs Sydney
  • Sydney have scored exactly one goal in their last two games vs Newcastle

Newcastle Jets vs Sydney FC Head To Head

Sydney won the first meeting this season 4-1. The Jets responded with 2-1 and 2-0 wins before last week's 1-1 share of the spoils in the first leg.

Newcastle Jets Form Analysis

It's been a spectacular season for the Jets, who are still harbouring ambitions of securing an unprecedented domestic treble.

Mark Milligan brought instant success to the Jets, winning the Australia Cup in preseason before leading his young side to the minor premiership, with Newcastle celebrating with a 4-0 win over the Mariners at home on the final day of the regular campaign.

After earning a week off, the Jets returned to action last week and were solid on the road. Clayton Taylor set up the equaliser with a dazzling run down the left flank before squaring perfectly inside for Eli Adams to fire home the equaliser.

Sydney FC Form Analysis

It was a bumpy road throughout the season and it got to a stage where Sydney weren't assured of finals football, which led to the departure of Ufuk Talay.

Patrick Kisnorbo took charge of the club and while he hasn't set the world on fire, he's steadied the ship as the Sky Blues have gone unbeaten in their last six games.

However, two wins from nine games isn't great form for Sydney - but technically, they don't need to win a game inside 90 minutes for the remainder of the season to be crowned premiers.

Sydney took the lead through on-loan striker Apostolos Stamatelopoulos in the 50th minute last week, but their advantage didn't last for long as Newcastle scored eight minutes later. Kisnorbo was buoyed by his side's display, despite failing to finish the job at home.

“The performance was great,” Kisnorbo said post-match.
“I think that’s probably been our best performance since I’ve been here, which is fantastic. We want to be a bit more aggressive with the way we play, and we did that great tonight. Tonight they showed they can do that for 90-minutes plus and it’s pleasing to see."
