Melbourne City hosts Wellington Phoenix at AAMI Park in a pivotal A-League encounter, with both teams keen to strengthen their playoff positions. City, reviving their form with three wins in their last four matchups, aim to leverage their superior squad on paper. Meanwhile, Phoenix also approaches the game on a high note, riding a three-game winning streak, including a major victory over Melbourne Victory. As both sides display formidable form, City is anticipated to halt Wellington's momentum and secure another vital win.

Melbourne City vs Wellington Phoenix Tips & Prediction

It's a match that could have big finals implications for both sides as Melbourne City play host to Wellington Phoenix at AAMI Park in the A-League on Sunday.

Both sides are in good form, bringing four-game unbeaten streaks in the league into this encounter. City have propelled themselves back into the top six with back-to-back home wins over the last week, while Wellington have come from nowhere to put together a three-game winning streak - including beating Melbourne Victory at this venue last week, which was their first win over Victory at AAMI Park in nine years.

Phoenix can't be underestimated, but City look back in form and do have the stronger side on paper. With a chance to start establishing themselves within the top six, I think they take their chances at home here. Will also back BTTS - No at plus money. Marcus Younis returns from suspension and was heavily involved in his last game against the Wanderers, while he also got on the scoresheet against Wellington earlier in the campaign.
  • City have won three of the last four meetings
  • City have won three of their last four A-League games
  • BTTS - No has landed in five of the last six meetings
  • BTTS - No has landed in four of Wellington's last six games
  • BTTS - No has landed in three of City's last five A-League games
  • Marcus Younis scored vs Wellington in R15 & had a goal & two assists vs Wanderers last time out

Melbourne City vs Wellington Phoenix Head To Head

City have won the last three meetings with Wellington before a 2-2 draw in Round 15.

Ifeanyi Eze put Wellington ahead 2-0 with a brace before Younis and Medin Memeti got City back level.

Melbourne City Form Analysis

City come into this contest with a 8-8-7 record on the season, recently climbing back inside the top six after a tough campaign.

Aurelio Vidmar's side have struggled for the bulk of the A-League season, but they are starting to catch fire when it matters most, winning three of their last four games.

After a clinical 3-0 dispatch of the Wanderers where winger Marcus Younis played a starring role, City backed up with a 2-1 mid-week triumph over the Mariners - a result that saw them overtake Macarthur into sixth spot.

Andreas Kuen opened the scoring for his second goal in as many games before Andrew Nabbout doubled City's advantage. The Mariners scored late in stoppage time, but the result was never in any doubt.

Wellington Phoenix Form Analysis

Phoenix head into this clash playing some of their best football of the season, rising up to eighth spot on the ladder, just two points behind City in sixth.

That means a win here would see them leapfrog City on the table and potentially finish the round in the finals positions.

Wellington have compiled a three-game winning streak, taking care of lowly Perth (2-0) and Brisbane (2-1) before last week's big 1-0 upset of Melbourne Victory.

Sander Kartum volleyed home the winner in the 88th minute to hand Phoenix their first win over Victory at AAMI Park in nine years, keeping the Kiwi club well and truly in the finals picture.
