Australia vs Switzerland Tips & Prediction - Socceroos look to find form ahead of World Cup

Australia face Switzerland in their final pre-World Cup match at SnapDragon Stadium, with both teams expected to focus on defensive solidity ahead of the tournament. The Socceroos have struggled to create goal-scoring opportunities under Tony Popovic, while Switzerland will be without Embolo due to visa issues but may field Amdouni. Recent form suggests low-scoring games with little attacking threat from Australia. The recommended bets are under 2.5 goals and both teams not to score, with value on Jordy Bos or Zeki Amdouni anytime scorer.

Australia vs Switzerland Tips & Prediction

It's the final hit-out before the World Cup gets underway as the Socceroos tackle Switzerland at SnapDragon Stadium on Saturday night in San Diego (Sunday morning AEST).

This is it for Tony Popovic and the Socceroos - he needs to settle on a definitive starting team and decide on the style of play he wants to adopt. A steely defender back in his playing days, Popovic has certainly made his influence felt since taking charge of the Socceroos, setting the team up defensively and playing with a 'not to lose' mentality.

The problem with that is the Socceroos have been losing a lot lately - including their last three meetings with top 25 nations. A familiar pattern is playing out - Australia set up defensively, offer nothing in attack, eventually concede and when Popovic unleashes the shackles, it's too late for the substitutes to make an impact.

We'll see if anything changes here, but I doubt it. Switzerland are in solid form, but have issues of their own, with star striker Breel Embolo delayed from entering the USA after his visa was initially declined due to a criminal record. The Swiss are coming off a thumping 4-1 victory over Jordan last week.

Anything could really happen here, with both nations not wanting to risk too much ahead of the big dance. I'm going to back Under 2.5 Goals & BTTS - No as the best bet. Australia can't attack until proven otherwise and the Swiss might not be going all out here. If the Socceroos do offer something, Jordy Bos offers tremendous value at $14 anytime goalscorer with Unibet - the marauding left fullback has netted three times in his last four appearances for his nation and is arguably the side's best player.

Burnley forward Zeki Amdouni is a chance to replace Embolo in the Swiss starting side and will be eager to impress manager Murat Yakin after coming back from a knee injury.
  • Australia have seen BTTS - No in four of their last five games
  • Switzerland have seen BTTS - No in six of their last 10 games
  • Switzerland have seen Under 2.5 goals in four of their last seven games
  • Jordy Bos has scored in three of his last four games for Australia
  • Zeki Amdouni has scored 11 goals in 28 previous appearances for Switzerland

Australia vs Switzerland Head To Head

Just the one previous meeting between these two nations, which resulted in a 0-0 stalemate back in a 2010 friendly.

Australia Form Analysis

It's been a tough run of games for the Socceroos since they secured automatic qualification into the 2026 World Cup.

Two home wins over Cameroon and Curacao aside, Australia have lost their last four games on foreign soil and their last three against top 25 nations.

That's obviously a concern ahead of games with Turkey, Paraguay and host nation USA for the upcoming World Cup in Group D.

The Socceroos were second-best in last week's 1-0 defeat to Mexico. Once again, Australia struggled to create anything meaningful going forward. Norwich striker Mo Toure missed an open net from just outside the box in the team's best chance.

Australia Team News

Cristian Volpato could be the answer to Australia's attacking woes, with the Sassualo winger in line for a debut here after switching allegiances from Italy last week.

Will be interesting to see if Nestory Irankunda gets a start or Popovic prefers to continue using the electric winger as an impact player off the bench.

Switzerland Form Analysis

Switzerland are one of the more consistent teams in football, but they've gone out in the R16 or before in their last eight World Cup appearances, so they clearly have a ceiling.

But more often than not, they navigate past weaker nations, so that's good news after they were draw in a soft group alongside Canada, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Qatar.

Murat Yakin's side were comfortable 4-1 winners over Jordan on Swiss soil last week, with Dan Ndoye, Breel Embolo, Christian Fassnacht and veteran captain Granit Xhaka all getting on the scoresheet.

A 0-0 stalemate with Norway preceded that victory.

Switzerland Team News

As mentioned, Embolo is out of this game and his World Cup campaign could be in doubt as he awaits visa clearance.

Zeki Amdouni or Cedric Itten should be in line to replace him up front.
